  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

All that glitters...

This was all done with sponges, even the horizontal strokes. The paint is gold metallic, so when the light hits it a certain way it looks like a gilded relief. (see below)

The subject is sort of boring, I was going more for atmosphere. Any suggestions to jazz it up?

Do you mean like add a bird or just what?
like leaves in the wind illustrating that it's there, something though, it gives the impression that this place exists separately from a larger context.

I agree. I think you need to emphasize the sky a little or even the grass with a little animal or a couple relaxing people or just something to give your eyes something to focus on.

When we're out in nature and come upon a scene like this, what is it about the scene that captures our attention? Is it just leaves and grass and sky or is it the smaller details like the delicate blossoms of a wild rose along the edge of the distant tree line, a path meandering through the field, or the dramatic billowy clouds scattered throughout the sky. Is there an animal we've stopped to look at hoping we don't frighten it away? Have we stumbled upon some other people relaxing here and are just observing them discretely for a few moments? Do we have a destination in mind that exists on the other side of this scene and is just coming into view? Or is our imagination having fun and picturing things in this scene that don't actually exist in real life?

That's really nice what you did with the gold! I have a printed picture of a boat that is gilded like that and when you walk by it almost looks like the waves are moving. Keep up the good work!

Is there a way to make the air between the objects alive? It seems like it's not there.

I just fiddled with some of the hue and saturation levels in photoshop. I airbrushed in a few leaves. Maybe a little more atmosphere now. less booring?

Thanks for the suggestions. I was originally thinking of maybe an Adam and Eve as subjects, but then though my garden was too ordinary for that. Thanks for the compliment on the gold. I might start playing with more metallics. lol

Funny that you should post this right now, by the way. I actually found an original painting in the trash at my apartment building and I'm in the process of trying to save it since there was a bad storm rain and hail before I got to it. It's drying under a stack of books on my kitchen floor right now. ^_^

I'll post a photo of it just for fun.

I think my biggest mistake was painting a landscape in the vertical portrait orientation. That only seems to work when trying a portrait of an interesting tree.
Yes, that was my other thought. It's kind of a narrow focus if you want to add something to the image. But don't forget you can always add something to the foreground too, like someone from behind looking out at the scene.

See, that's the proper orientation for a landscape, the landscape orientation. I'm such a sophomore. :)

It's nice that you rescued it from the trash. That looks likes some European village. Maybe there is an app that can find the location. Or if you take it out of the frame and check the back maybe the painter recorded some of the details of the location.

Is there a poem of God or bible verse that goes with the golden picture..?

That's a great thought.
I know of a Christian themed Robert Frost poem that might work.

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Yeah I thought it was worth saving. Thankfully it was partially under a trash bag so a little guarded from the weather, but there were some tears and rippling. It appears to be painted on thin dark brown paper on a cardboard backing. The back was painted light blue, interestingly. I'll have to check it for writing once it dries. the nails holding it in the frame had pulled through in a few spots, so I had to delicately bend them all back to remove it without tearing the painting more. I don't think the artist is famous or anything, or at least Google hasn't heard of him! But who knows?

Yeah I guess that's why they call it landscape and portrait. I never really gave that much thought. ^_^

I think your painting is perfect the way it is. You're an impressionist painter and painted it to show a path..

Could turn this into an animation, just add leaves to it falling down and a poem or bible verse about God or a path or something about his beauty.

Yeah, that might be it. The ground seems to be for another place, it's hard to imagine that the forest is rooted in the same ground for the green picture. When it's gold hued, the picnic patch in the middle is less pronounced and harmonizes better.

The leaves in the air and the extra hues is a really good touch, totally adds the atmosphere effect.
