  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Seems to me we've been seeing some tension going on here at the C&WR forum. I realize that moving the LDS and JW members here wasn't a popular decision amongst not only them but other members as well.

We get it. You don't like the change and the move but the decision was final and everyone has to accept it. However we need to stop not only the open complaining about it but the constant flaming going on in these threads.

First if there is a problem with anything always take it up in the Member Services Center

Second. Everyone needs to calm down. If you disagree with someone then that's fine but you need to do it with a loving and respectable manner. Flaming doesn't get anyone anywhere except to ban camp or thread closures. Staff doesn't want to do that but will if we start seeing more and more flaming and goading going on.

Keep it civil in here guys please. I will bump this up for 1 week to drive this point across.

Remember:

1.Any complaints of staff actions, rules and discussions must be taken to the Member Services Center no exceptions.
2.Address the post not the poster. Keep it civil and calm. If you have questions contact me via PM,another staffer or start a thread in the MSC. If you need me to teach you guys how to handle disagreements let me know and I will show you how.

Fundamentally I'm okay if Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses post here (or, have to post here I suppose). What I have found completely unpleasant is that there seems to have been, in the move, a sense among those who freely attacked Mormons and Mormonism in Unorthodox Theology that they can continue to do that here without being criticized themselves for it.

If Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are going to have to be restricted here via cyber ghetto, then the very least is that they be given the same basic respect that other religions be given here. That this place ought to be a place for a free and respectful exchange of ideas, not a place for anti-Mormon internet missionaries to get on their soapboxes with the expectation that Mormons be, effectively, disallowed to be able to have a free and equal voice in the discussion.

If I have come across as antagonistic the last few days, it's because I tend to react negatively when I feel something rather unjust is being done. If something seems, ultimately, like bullying, I'm probably not going to remain quite as cordial as I would usually prefer to act.

So my major input is this: Those who have drifted on over here who have spent their time criticizing Mormonism in the way that I've seen in the posts lately need to understand that they have to adjust to the way we do things over here. Otherwise this will simply become an open sewer and, really, who is going to want to post here if that's all it becomes?

I think it is fair to say that Via Crucis represents the sentiments of all of the regulars here. I couldn't say it better myself.

What does "report free" mean?
When you post, do NOT address one another. Address Staff members only and stick to the topic. Any posts that address other members shall be removed if they do not benefit the discussion. Off Topic posts will be removed. Flaming posts...removed. Discuss the topic and not any specific person.

I've also seen the idea floated that if the Mormons just stopped responding it would eventually go away, but that is an unacceptable request. I would not allow thread after thread speaking ill of Judaism to go unchecked, because some people who know nothing of my faith may walk away with a terrible impression. While we don't seek converts, Jews have enough problems in the world without creating another antisemite.

I did not agree with the decision to move the LDS and JW out of Unorthodox Theology. Equally, it is hard to know the nature of this forum before the change occurred because the rules were changed to accommodate the decision that was made. The LDS and JW were allowed to post with an equal voice in the discussion before the move, and I assume that they will continue to be able to do so. I do not believe that LDS and JW theology should be allowed to be promoted, which is what would occur if it was not debated. Their theologies they claim to be Christian in nature, and on a Christian discussion board, with many people lurking, without debate, people could become confused with such postings being made under a Christian claim.

I do believe that the discussions should be civil in nature, but to suggest that people debating with the LDS and JW is equal to bullying is wrong.

Again, to reiterate, it was not our decision to move anyone anywhere, the forum rules were changed to accommodate the decision and debate does not equal bullying. And I agree that discussion should be done civilly. But it should be done so that the lurkers, moreso than the posters, IMO, understand the differences and problems with unorthodox theologies.

I've seen the same arguments coming up on thread after thread after thread by the same people. If those people are doing that and not listening one bit to the answer to their arguments, it's bullying in my opinion. It's rapid fire claims in an attempt to overwhelm the few people here of those faiths.

I agree. The whole situation in this forum now is just awful, IMHO.

There are already rules in this forum against proselytizing. What we are objecting to are threads generally started by non-Mormons attacking them.
That is not what the World Religion Forum is for. If a Mormon says something someone else disagrees with, of course they are free to respond but this digging up as much dirt as people can against them leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth. It doesn't make Mormons look bad, it makes the people attack them look bad.

I do believe that the discussions should be civil in nature, but to suggest that people debating with the LDS and JW is equal to bullying is wrong.

If it looks like bullying to those of us who are observing the debates perhaps it should be considered who is doing the 'confusing' about the nature of the gospel.

And I agree that discussion should be done civilly. But it should be done so that the lurkers, moreso than the posters, IMO, understand the differences and problems with unorthodox theologies.

What we are seeing is the problems with so-called 'orthodox' theologies.

The problem is, many of the posters that do debate against the LDS, were once LDS themselves, so they know what the LDS teach. When a religion has changed it's outward appearance to try to be more acceptable to mainstream Christianity while keeping it's core teachings intact, it gives the appearance of being deceitful. Those who used to be LDS, who know what the core teachings are, post them to teach the lurkers what their true beliefs on a subject are.

Because someone was once part of a group they have since left, they get to be the ruling experts on what that religion truly teaches?

There are plenty of ex-Christians on this part of the forum. Shall I assume they know Christianity so they should be able to post the same arguments that have been answered again and again and again?
