Akira, the ending

Okay, i watched akira recently (the first time in years) and now, the ending is even more confusting. As much as i love anime (or used to anyway) this always seemed like the most 'suddenly-twisted-and-confusing' ending ever.

For me, it all starts to go downhill when Tetsuo forges that arm out of metal and stuff. After that, the movie just seems to spiral down into a confusing and unexplained ending.

Will someone explain all this to me?

I watched the ending of that movie like 5 times.

I think its supposed to be "mysterious" and not really have an explaination. I think there are hints of the creation of a new universe, or re-creation of the universe, or something like that. I also think a lot of it ties in with what... the girl was saying in the prison cell about the beginning of the universe and the creatures and the communal knowledge, etc.
