  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I enlisted with the Air Force back in January. My first choice was to become a linguist/translator, but I failed the DLAB by 2 points. My recruiter is working on getting me an exception to policy, but for some reason it's taking extra long for the paperwork to circulate between Washington state, Texas, and California. Apparently they decided to run a second credit check on me, even though the first one came out fine. Does anyone know why this might be? Also, do you think my odds of going to the DLI are pretty good, or will I be sticking with my third option, that I'm already definitely slated for?

I am in the Air Force. I can tell you this, everything is waiverable. If they are hurting for linguists then you never know. They are huge on rules and regulations. If they want something bad enough they will waiver it. I took the DLAB as well, what a whacked out test huh!
As for your credit check there are three major credit reporting services (Equifax, Trans Union and Experian) sometimes if something is bad (not saying there is) with your credit it may show on one and not the others. They are just being thorough so dont sweat it.
The one thing I can tell you is if you want to join to serve your country and be in the military then that is cool but do not sign up for a job or take a job that you MIGHT think you may not like. It is four or six years of your life. Those years can be agonizing or they can be fun and rewarding.
Good Luck

I can tell you for sure that they're aching for Mid-Eastern language linguists (ie Arabic, et al); I've seen the cross-training slots for them and there's quite a few compared to other jobs. Of course, I don't know about other languages, and I could be wrong but I think those languages require a higher score than certain others (ie Spanish).
