1 John 5:8
the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
In Christianity there is a common theme I will hear from people. "The blood saves!" Although true, I can't help but look at it but a scriptural point of view. In this verse it states something different from those people. They actually should say His water, blood and Spirit saves. Since all three agree as one, then just saying the blood would prove to show a incomplete gospel. If something agrees as one, then you agree that all three are needed to give its benefit, salvation.
In previous verses in 1 John 5:5-6 it says:
"Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
This is the one who came by water and blood —Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth."
It is still saying what we all know. That the one who overcomes is the one who believes Jesus is the Son of God. But again it doesn't only say His blood. It says both water and blood. If I may also point out it says "Not water only". Now this is really interesting.
If I will point out something in Acts concerning the baptism of John.
Acts 11:15-17
And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
It is showing here that the baptism of John is something amazing. I have to say that even the Lord mentions John before departing in Acts 1:5, he said "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
But if you read Acts 10:43-47 you will see how faith gives the remission of sin, and that these people were saved from their sin without water baptism.
John 3:5 says you must be born again of water and the Spirit though, but what about Acts 10:43-47? A contradiction I suppose if you believe baptism saves, but nothing says that, but rather they say faith saves. On the other hand we see constant references to Johns baptism.
I will close with this Matthew 17:10-13
And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “Indeed, Elijah is coming first and will restore all things. But I say to you that Elijah has come already, and they did not know him but did to him whatever they wished. Likewise the Son of Man is also about to suffer at their hands.” Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them of John the Baptist.
John the Baptist restored all things.
Jesus had to suffer.
Jesus' Resurrection.
Water, blood and Spirit(spirit gaining from belief) agreeins as one
Water and blood proving to be sin atonement.
