Women’s Aglow brings back recollections of the 70s and the once influential FGBMFI. In my opinion, FGBMFI had as much to do with the success of Charismatic renewal among mainstream denominations as any other single organization throughout the 60s-80s.

However, as with all parachurch organizations (including denominations and “movements”), they were only “for a season” and their time and influence has come-and-gone. All that is left is the man-made skeltal institutions and structures, offices and organization and it is now in the self-perpetuation mode, trying to re-capture their glory days. Unfortunately their methods are still in a 70s time-warp (one of their hackneyed slogans is still “His Banner Over Me is Love,” which was very avant-garde in c.1979 but no longer has the appeal it once did.) God has moved on but FGBMFI is still camped around the mountain.

Aglow, now in its 27th year, was once the women’s auxiliary of FGBMFI, and remains a more-lively group than its parent organization (as sexist as it may sound, women do seem to be able to nurture things – even organizations – better and longer than men). Somewhere along the way, Women’s Aglow apparently dropped their visible relationship with FGBMFI and now call themself Aglow International these days and seems to remain an active group. For more information about the group you can go to their website at http://www.aglow.org/.

The Women's Aglow in my hometown is full of a bunch of angry women who have left their church for one reason or another, and now consider Aglow meetings to be their "church." They are also fiercely and militantly right-wing, and a lot of times use Aglow to circulate their petitions against television shows, co-ed swimming and sex ed in schools, and other such evils in the world. They are not a very fun-loving bunch of women, and I have a hard time seeing the joy of the Lord in any of them. Not saying that it's Aglow's fault at all - just that that's what it's turned into there.

(The mother of my high school best friend is an officer - that's how I've had so much contact with those ladies!)

I didn't realise @ 1st that guys could go in, so I sat @ the top of some rear stairs, by an open door where I could hear, the 1st sunny evening, & sing along, enjoying the sea views!

Very moving to get in on the Sat & Sun & see so many nations represented!

Do you know Grace & Pam, from Formby chapter, Katie?

Grace helped set up the Southport Conferences for many years & red-haired Pam, an ex-sales rep, (& 1 of the best & keenest personal evangelists!), took over from Grace a few years ago, & probably helped set up that 1

Dawn, (ex Liverpool, now Southport), helped run a stand near the Floral Hall entrance

AH: you may well know a Jean from mid-Cheshire, who travels the globe doing cosmetics demos, (inc for Mission Wales, when she lived in Prestatyn)

I'm sure I'll go to the 1 coming up soon @ S'port, that you put on the new Southport thread of Regional board

I daresay a few Aglow folk will see Charlie Landsborough @ Warrington on Wed, Southport on Thurs & Rhyl on Fri

God bless!

Ian
