  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

This afternoon when my aunt and uncle were here, we just missed getting stormed on (which was lucky, since we were outside eating) the storm front swept past us a couple of kilometers to the south. Afterwards, there were these two awesome rainbows, and I thought I'd share some piccies with ya'll.

The first is a picture of the two rainbows side by side.. :)

the second is the 'end' of the rainbow, which really displays the full array of colours. :)

The third is my favourite shot... where the rainbow reaches the edge of the clouds and disappears. :)

enjoy!

Those are great pictures! I especially like the second one as it displays the full colours, like you said. If it's silm it's even better as it can be quite hard to get the colours fully there. Not tried taking pictures of rainbows too much though. The first one shows the darker area between the rainbow and the reversed one, I can't remember the name of this are though.

The photos don't show it, but to the naked eye the lower one started reversing again, which looked really really spectacular, but I couldn't get it to work. Oh well, as my mum always says, there are some moments that are just meant to be enjoyed. :) I haven't seen a rainbow that was that big, and that distinct in a while.

My approach to taking photos is if I see something beautiful, and I have my camera (I'm increasingly lugging it around everywhere I go) with me, I take a photo of it.

By the way, the dark patch between rainbows is called Alexander's dark band. I just found a webpage: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/atmos/ligsky.html

Thanks for the compliments :)

Nice picture of a rainbow. Next time, to get a great picture of a rainbow, try to find something else that the rainbow can compliment. In the web page you referenced, the photographer framed the rainbow over the houses in a symetrical composition. One of my favorite nature photographers, Galen Rowell, was on his way to visit the Dalai Lama, and saw a rainbow. He immediately jumped out of his car, and ran over a half mile with his camera and tripod to position the rainbow over the Dalai Lama's palace. The resulting picture is one of his most famous. You can see it at: http://www.mountainlight.com/posters.html He would tell that story to challenge other photographers to seek radical change of perspective to improve a picture.

The colors in your rainbow are as nice as any I have seen. I just think your picture would be even more memorable if you could have used the rainbow for some dramatic compositional purpose.
