• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

After my Pdoc fired me, I went off my meds and started using amino acids to control my bipolar 2. I take 5-htp and DL-phenylalanine to control the depression and GABA to control the hypomania. It costs me between around $50 a month for the supplements and my bipolar is more controlled than it's ever been.

Amino acids allow the brain to produce the necessary neurotransmitters needed to control your mood same as the meds do. For more info, check out the book What Your Doctor isn't Telling You About Depression. I'm not sure off the top of my head who wrote it but you can find it at Amazon.com.

There are some of the older meds that are in the $4 categories at the major companies like Walgreen's and Walmart. The question is really do the work for you. Also check out pt assistance programs. For those you usually need a prescription from your doctor and info on income/lack of insurance. The drug companies give away a 6-1 year supply to those in need. Let me know what med you are needing and I cna hjelp find if a program exists for you.

This response is probably a bit late, but Lamictal went generic fairly recently. It's the med that's helped me the most by far. I'm not sure how much it costs now, but it's undoubtedly cheaper than it was when I didn't have insurance!

Lithium is low cost, and Seroquel will be available in a generic in pharmacy's soon. Those are two meds that are widely used for bipolar. Should talk to your Dr. about your meds - pharmacists know more about the costs. I haven't tried any alt/herbal/vitamin meds that have worked. I haven't tried Lamectil because I've got allergies - I've heard that Lamectil has allergic side effects.

I have been wanting to try Lamictal. Right now I only take one 20mg Prozac
in the morning, but it's not enough to bring me up and out of this depression.

Um, when my pdoc diagnosed me with mood disorder n.o.s. and put me on depakote, I finally got him to own up to why he really thought I should be on it. He admitted he thought I was bipolar. I haven't gone manic yet, so the new pdoc says nah. Depakote in the non long acting form is one of the 4 buck meds at wally world I think.
