  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, I am signed up for my first online course this semester. I'm feeling a little apprehensive about it. I really like having a face to face connection with my professors, and I am absolutely terrified about piping up with my thoughts and opinons on a public message board (hence why my post count is so ridiculously low)

Does anyone have any advice or encouraging testimonials?

Edit: I'd like to apologize for forgetting the title of the thread. I meant to put the word "Need" up there in front as I have no advice to give. :p See this is exactly the type of thing that I worry about, silly as it sounds.

I have taken a few on-line classes.

What I use to do is go and met with my professor and then we'd discuss what was expected of me.

We went over the couse outline and if I had an questions, I could e-mail him or come in.

It takes a lot of motivation to do it because it's not like in the class. Everything is outside and you do it yourself and have to do it. It's up to you to do what is expected of you to learn.

I liked them because I could work at my own pace and it was a good way to sqeeze in come extra credits for college.

I'm taking an online class right now, and i've taken one before. I agree that it's difficult not seeing your professor and classmates face to face. It takes more determination and time-management since it's all on you and there isn't a set schedule of classes and accountability of that sort for having your work done. You have to make yourself do it even though there isn't a person in front of you that you have to see three times a week or whatever.

i think online classes are harder. I like to speak up in class and it's not the same on a message board. is the college you are taking the online class from the same place you go to in-person classes?

perhaps you will be able to have face to face study groups with other students, especially if you take the initiative to arrange it. I agree that it's a good idea to meet with the professor also. If both of you are on campus anyway, why not ask your questions in person during their office hours in addition to being involved on the message boards?

maybe that will help.

I'll pray for you to succeed. I feel you on this one!

You're not as much of an Internet nerd as I am, but I've found that it's best for me not to take online classes. There's just other stuff I wanna do, and the class stuff always gets pushed to the wayside. Face-to-face works well with me, and that's what I stick to now.

I love online courses! I've taken so many. Just follow the syllabus and stay as organized as possible. It can be hard getting motivated at times but I think it's more convenient and I find I learn more b/c I can focus on what I am interested in at my own pace. I think they are good if you can make yourself do the work

I love my onlince courses and only once have I gotten less than an "A." My advice would be to stay on top of assignments! Don't slack or forget to check the site just because you're tired or busy with other classes. Treat it the same as you would a regular class and put in your study time. If you have a question about something, ask. If you're nervous about something, tell the professor. He/she may be able to help you and put you at ease. Communicating with your professor(s) is very important, as well.

Good luck!
