The only group of Adventists I have ever known to practice the headcovering for women is a group called the Davidians. They are an off-shoot of the Seventh Day Adventist church; and unassociated with it.

They believe in the Writting of Ellen G. White and a message called the Shepherd's Rod. I know that you can find this group on the internet but I forget what their website is. You can google it.

I dont know if this is the group you were thinking of anyhow.

I have come across Seventh Day Adventists on the internet who practice head coverings for women and can not find them again. It has only been in the past month, not a long time back. Are there any others on here who know of any Adventists who hold to this practice?? Thank you.

A couple years ago I came across a Yahoo Group that was focussed on this. As far as I could tell, it wasn't a special offshoot of the Adventists..rather a group of women who believed in it. I wish I still had the links, too.

There are verses in the Bible, which speak of headcoverings..but I believe the slight research I did with a friend of mine basically supported that even 'hair' is a headcovering for women. It's more refering to women not shaving their heads, I guess. In the past, people wore hats. To be honest, ever since I read about the stuff I stick with keeping my hair at least shoulder length..and never tied back at church. I dont know why, but it stuck with me.

Here, I found the verses:

1 Corinthians 11:1-16

1 - Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
2 - Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
3 - But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4 - Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5 - But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
6 - For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
7 - For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 - For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man.
9 - Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10 - For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
11 - Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
12 - For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
13 - Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14 - Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15 - But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16 - But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

Anyone else have an opinion of this stuff? :)

Paul comments many times about not bringing public disgrace onto the church if at all possible. Back in Bible times women were supposed to stay in the background and basically not be seen. From what I've studied, the verse is talking about not bringing disgrace onto the church. Nowadays, covering your head is not an issue of public disgrace.
Honestly, the only time issues about women and submission comes up is when our male brothers have a problem with control or when women buy into that control. It also smells of legalism. It has nothing to do with love, the 10 commandments, or the gifts of the Holy Spirit. When I have a question like this, I start with Gal. 5:6. Is it from faith? Or am I trying to impress God or anyone?
Gal. 3:28 says that in Christ, there is not male or female, slave or free, Jew or Greek.
Having come out of legalism, I can spot it very quickly. I guard my freedom in Christ.

That's my 2-cents!

I believe you are right flatlandah that in today's church it more about control than anything else. This is my take on it; some men seem to think women should have to submit to them; it seems to be their ego more than anything. You know I remember sitting in church one sabbath and them going on and on and on about how the woman is to submit; I was new in Lord and I remember thinking who wants to get married after hearing this; this is slavery for the woman. Get my coffee do this do that. I was like oh praise the Lord I am not married. Now I bring that up in this conversation because it another thing about submission; she should have head covered in order to show she is under the man (her husband). Well I spent years trying to get over my first impression that for the woman marriage is slavery. Because all this focus on her submitting and very little on the husband having to love her as Christ loved his church.
You know it definetely does not apply to single women because how can a single woman be under her husband :)) Does not make sense. Got to love logical thinking.
However with that all said it can be all about love if she is doing because she just wants to be in obedience to Christ because she loves him. You know it is like you don't obey because you want salvation you obey because you have salvation. Christ said that if we love Him we will obey Him (John 14: 15)I think it better not to judge a woman for covering or not covering. Each one should live by what the Spirit has convicted them of; and not judge one another. Headcovering is not esential for salvation there is nothing wrong in doing it or not as long as you are living up to your convictions. If you believe it is a sin not to cover then for you not to cover is a sin. Before your own master you stand or fall (Romans 14:1-4 and verse14)

probly better wording would be that they were once SDAs. they left membership in the SDA church and formed their own Davidian organization. i guess we can use past tense in referring to them now.

I don't know of any SDA doctrine that would require people to wear head coverings or would stop them from doing it if they wish to. I have seen women in church with hats and without them... mostly no hats.

Makes sense to me ..

I am a new Seventh Day Adventist but I have worn a head covering for public prayer since the Lord convicted me of this in 1975. Most churches do not teach this but the scripture is clear, and fir no other reason, because of the angels phrase should be enough.

You are free to do so of course... no matter that the denomination does not "require" it. :)

It could have to do with the group which practices temperance in all areas including their diet.

I know, there are some women in Adventism, who neither perm nor braid their hair. I think it's all to do with the health reform message..

My parents became Adventists the year I was born, and I've never heard of this, I'll be 70 this year so I've been around the church a while.
