Advent has historically tied the First Advent (the coming of Christ in the manger at Bethlehem) to the Second Advent (the snatching away of the redeemed as seen in 1 Thess. 4:13-18 and the coming of Christ to the earth in Rev. 1:7, 19:11-16).

For some, the Advent season presents many frustrations. I would guess that most pastors have difficulty keeping the season of Advent services fresh each year, while others have never taken the opportunity to celebrate Advent in their churches.

If you and your church do not celebrate Advent, why not?

I am fairly new to the Baptist church and am really not sure if my church celebrates Advent or not. I found the article that was posted in my previous post very interesting though.

Growing up in the Episcopal Church, advent was always something that we celebrated.

Do Baptists celebrate Advent?
Not in the way Catholics celebrate it, but yes, sort of in a different way.

We prepare for Christmas by visiting our friends and family that we haven't seen in a long time, we gather presents for less fortunate families, we serve lunches at the local soup kitchen or collect food for the food pantries, we bake and decorate and go about wishing everyone a merry Christmas, we send letters and cards to Christians in faraway places that we want to encourage, we might even go to thrift stores and buy blankets to give to the homeless. In short, we act as much like Christ as we possibly can.

How do you celebrate Advent?

Advent is the begining of the liturgical year and is a time for penance and preparation for the birth of Christ. Purple is worn during the season, just as it is during Lent. Pink can be worn on the third Sunday, Gaudette Sunday, as a sign of joy at the upcoming Nativity. We have prayerful reflections and Advent wreaths (a Lutheran custom, I believe) are quite popular.
