• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Eventually, the choice will be those alternative power sources, or sitting in the dark.

I'm beginning to think that sitting in the dark might not be such a bad idea, if it restores some of the ancient practices which benefited us as a species. i.e. family activities such as non-computer related games, the absence of the idiot box, the return of reading books by candlelight, warm fires, warm faces and lots of goodly warm beer and wine.

The point I made was that you want to argue "against" things rather than "for" things. In other words, arguing from the position of a "negative approach".

Stir in a generous mitten full of nasty and you have just about summarized it to a T.

It's round about that time now.

Rampant disease, child mortality, bad teeth that could poison you, bad food and a thousand other things our modern technology has helped us survive.

That's the trouble with hindsight we only ever see the good things never the bad, if Americans really looked into life for early Americans it was horrific to say the least,
in the cities it was rat, flea and lice infested with the bonus of contaminated water, in the country it was exactly the same only with possible starvation thrown in.

(laughs) I was pretty sure that someone was bound to respond with how hard it was for the early pioneers, yet whenever there was load shedding in my old hometown -- quite a regular happening now days -- we'd light the candles, serve up the evening meal (courtesy of all those things we take for granted in our lives) -- it was also a time for all of us to gather together away from our respective computer screens and communicate old school. For what it's worth and keeping in mind the horrors of how it used to be for those early America pioneers (I'm not America, but I've seen enough movies and documentaries to know that it was hard) we may have dealt with the rats, fleas, lice and drink purified water seven times over and dealt with poverty for most -- but don't forget that a large part of our modern world is still living as if nothing has changed!

That's only because of religion, ignorance and greed.

These three devils have a father -- but what has your wisdom taught you about their origin?
They all originated in darkness and thrive while darkness persists, shine the bright light of democratic socialism on them and they will all wither and die,
hopefully the US of A will be the next to feel the benefit of that bright light.

Well seeing as you brought up the subject of religion, it's my understanding that there is such a thing as worthless religion.

Ignorance some say is bliss yet there is a kind of knowledge which puffs a person up with so much pride that they are quite incapable of having much else in their lives.

Greed or selfishness is one of the many imposters who ruin life and are at the root of worthless religion.

I'd like to believe that we've evolved to embrace a 'goodly infection' but it's my observation that most us us have some serious notice to serve on these imposters which are to blame for the way things are.

Could you please point out a religion that is not worthless?

As a friend once said, 'It's an inside job' A religion of worth begins with dethroning the imposters in our lives and learning to follow what another writer once described as 'the road less traveled'
It's more of a principle of life than a brand name, though if you wanted me to name it -- I'd say it's all about those brave people mentioned in Kris Kristofferson's song 'They Killed Him'

I see so you don't know of one, I thought not, you could have said 'all the others' but you knew that would be a lie.

The you must be talking about Allāh the monotheistic god of the Abrahamic religion articulated by the Qur'an, the god with the most confirmed believers.

I am referring to unity and there is that among those who practice a religion which is not worthless.

To expand upon what I've written thus far concerning worthless religion:
'Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.'
“Therefore, salt is good; but if even salt has become tasteless, with what will it be seasoned? It is useless either for the soil or for the manure pile; it is thrown out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

We have still to explore 'ignorance' and 'greed' (I refer my post 89)

Scientists need to evaluate science.
And they do, through peer review and by reproducing results. In the end, that is what counts. Results. Not debate skills.

In science, you make your case in a paper.

Some do both. i.e., Richard Dawkins. Finis.

When Dawkins (and many others) give lectures, they do it in the name of education.
When they are on stage, they are educating the public, they are not trying to convince their peers of some scientific idea they've had.

The debating thing is a different thing all together, but which -I would guess- they would also categorize under "education".

Dawkins is a scientist, an author, a teacher and a public speaker.
You understand that these are 4 different jobs, right?

There is no such thing as a religion which is not worthless. all religions are worthless until they have been show to be true, if they have not been shown to be true they have no more worth than the religion of Samoan Idol worship or the cult of the FSM, belief in something is not proof of something, something does not become true just because you want it to be true, believe me I wish it did.
