Were Adam and Eve at the Tree Together?
(A somewhat technical question.)

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” (Genesis 3:6)

It is interesting to me that in the verse just quoted, the two phrases:
“and did eat” (with regards to Eve), and,
“with her; and he did eat” (with regards to Adam),

both represent the single Hebrew word, “akal” (Strongs #398).

But there appears to be nothing in the Hebrew that corresponds with the term “with her”.

Where does the idea come from that they were both at the Tree together when Eve “took of the fruit”?

As far as I can tell, the Hebrew word “akal”, has 12 main variants, and the form used [both times] in Genesis 3:6 is called ‘Piel’ (which denotes intensity and repetition). Yet I cannot see how the construct supports the term, “with her”. Where is it in the original language?

Can somebody help me to clarify this point?

Thank you ECR. I am aware of the thoughts you’ve quoted for me, and have no doubt as to the accuracy of all those words. However, this is one of the points where our enemies say things like,

“the Bible says this, and Ellen White says that. They do not agree...”

I have posed a somewhat technical question for those that enjoy 'word-smithing', and I do look for more clarity on the wording in Gen 3:6.

Thanks again for the EGW quotes.

Looking at Strong's, the key word to me is H5973 that means 'in conjuction with'. I read this passage to mean that after she gave it to Adam she ate it in conjuction with him, not that he was physically 'with' her at the time of transgression.

That's my two pieces of copper... your mileage may vary.

I think the fact that the serpent conversed with Eve only indicate perhaps Adam was not around.

And Paul wrote on the role of women that Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. So one can deduct that Eve was alone in the act.

I don't think the scriptures are explicit on this. But I think it leans towards that she was alone.

Really? This is truly how you view those who have reached different conclusions?

You are not my enemy.

BFA
BFA,

Truly. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. It is swallowed in victory and then passed out into the outer darkness where the refuse goes.

Yet, a brother is born for adversity and every man's hand will be against his brother.

Let us pray that the Lord will save us from the works of our hands that provoke him to anger and that hurts and destroys in his holy mountain.

He is coming to destroy those who destroy the earth.

We cannot say that the thing that is in our right hand is a lie, yet all men are liars.

Rom 3:3-4
3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?

4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. KJV

but shun foolish questionings, and genealogies, and strifes, and fightings about law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

I agree completely.

I find that arguments about this tends to lead to unfortunate implications about the role of women.
