Acts 24
15 I have hope in God, which they themselves also accept, that there will be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and the unjust.

Luke 23
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. "
43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."


After a person dies when are they raised from the dead?

If this question doesn't make sense, I'll try and ask it in another way.

I believe that when a Christians dies, their souls go straight to heaven, and their bodies will be resurrected on the last Day.

1 Corinthians 15:20-23 (KJV): "20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. 21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming."

The faithful are resurrected at the return of Christ. I prefer the suggestion that the comma can be moved in Luke 23:43. Jesus was still talking about his coming and the establishment of his kingdom. The word paradise refers to the restoration of the garden of Eden. The LXX uses the same word for the Garden of Eden. Your quotation of Luke 23 then reads

Luke 23:40 But the other criminal rebuked him. "Don't you fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. "
43 Jesus answered him, "I tell you the truth today, you will be with me in paradise."

In other words, Jesus was not changing the repentant thief's belief in the resurrection and the coming kingdom. The thief also believed that Jesus was the Holy One, without sin, the One who would establish this kingdom after His own resurrection. Jesus was telling him and reassuring him that he would not have to wait for Christ's return to get the answer to his request. Yes, the thief will be in the future Garden of Eden. Consider and compare how great was this man's faith in comparison to most of the disciples, the women, the two on the way to Emmaus, etc. John uses the expression that he was co-crucified, crucified with Christ John 19:32, Galatians 2:20.

Isaiah 51:3 (KJV): "For the LORD shall comfort Zion: he will comfort all her waste places; and he will make her wilderness like Eden, and her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving, and the voice of melody."
Revelation 2:7 (KJV): "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God."

The thief overcame by faith, having an ear to the Spirit's voice, resting his hope in Christ's resurrection and coming kingdom.

Most ministers teach that their church members go directly to heaven after death to comfort the relatives of the deceased but the Bible identifies just a few who have been raptured to heaven.Even Jesus did not go to heaven immediately.After He was raised from the dead,He had to ask people not to touch his body because He had not yet gone to His Father in heaven.

1 Thessalonians chapter four verses 13 and 16 give insight into death.It refers to the dead being "asleep" or the state of paradise Jesus was most likely speaking of.Verse 16 is a real gem because it describes the soon coming rapture. It describes how the "dead in Christ" will be the first to be raptured into heaven.That's why it makes no sense to pray to saints including the Virgin Mary because there is no biblical evidence that they are in heaven yet.

Rev 20:5-6 KJV But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. (6) Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.​
