'Then immediately an angel of the Lord struck him because he did not give glory to God. And he was eaten by worms and died.'

Is this to be taken literally or is itphrased this way as to suggest a horrible death?

I think there is an outside Biblical source, maybe Josephus, that describes Herod's death and if memory serves, it was quite terrible. I will see if I can find it, but I think the passage is giving the spiritual cause of the terrible physical death.

It was Josephus I remembered. The passage on Herod Agrippa's death can be found in Book XIX, Chapter 8, Paragraph 2 of his Antiquities of the Jews. Several sites have his works available, so feel free to look it up.
