  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Part of me wants to laugh at this and another part of me feels really bad. There's a bit of misinformation in this magazine. There are a few things that were okay, the overall I find this magazine disgusting.

There's a section called Hollywood Truth or Scam, I thought this was going to offer some decent advice, but it really didn't. It discussed how Hollywood sends messages about how everyone is having premarital sex, the thing is while I understand that everyone isn't engaging in sexual activity, I can recall a movie that came out not too long ago, Knocked Up where the message was if you engage in sexual activity there will be consequences.
Oh and don't forget the one that's aimed at guys.

http://www.humanlife.org/j4g.php

I'm just rambling here, but I would like to know, why does it seem okay to spread this false information to teens?
This discussion can also fall into the category of what is expected of males and females.

You are using a presupposition. ie Have you stopped beating your wife yet?

To answer the question requires accepting something as truth when it may or may not be, ie you beat your wife.

It is good to warn adults and children about Hollywood. Part of the reason why much of the world hates us so much is because of the trash they push. That trash is also a large part of why America has a problem with single women raising children under the poverty level. Mind control can be ughly.

There's something almost Pythonequely absurd about it.
It's like "Non-golfer Magazine".

I thought this too.

I'm not sure what advice you can possibly give to help people be abstinent, apart from "Don't have sex."

It seems the main focus is the teach the benefits of practicing abstinence. I don't have objections to this, but the problem is making it sound as though if you engage in premarital sex there's going to be all these horrible consequences. And it reinforces gender stereotypes in my opinion.

Statistically speaking the horrible consequences are there for premarital sex which are not there for abstinence.

I agree theres nothing wrong with teaching the benefits of abstinence, but trying to force people to abstain by using scare tactics is wrong. I seen a great movie about abstinence-only education called "everybody's doing it", in the movie one of the first things the teacher of the health class says is "If you have pre-marital sex just ONCE you may contract a disease or even DIE!" I lol'd so much! :p

Ever seen Mean Girls? "If you have sex you will get pregnant. And you will die."

But yeah, Hollywood isn't pushing this nearly as much as people think. Just because the Stars are doing it? Well yeah and all the tabloids do is talk about how bad it is so I doubt that's encouraging anything. When Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant, the kids weren't all going "OH COOL! I'M GOING TO GO HAVE SEX NOW!" They were seeing the consequences. If anything, Hollywood discourages it. Stars are the showcasing of the consequences of bad decisions. And recently there have been many movies about those consequences. The whole premise of Juno was about that, Knocked Up, like you said.

Yeah, I've been really happy with those movies (both good movies in their own right, I feel) trying to get the message out that sex, particularly unprotected sex, can cause pregnancy.

Indeed.

It does look like they're downplaying the fact that safe sex practices can help a whole lot in the fight against STIs - which of course means that when some of their readers do inevitably have sex, they'll be misled about the huge advantage of using condoms. Troubling.

Yes, that is certainly worrisome. Since only about 10% of people wait to have sex until they are married, that means that many of the readers of this magazine might have sex before marriage. And, whether or not they are married, a couple might want to prevent STIs or pregnancy, and so should learn about condoms and other contraceptive methods (though only condoms protect from STIs).

That is BS. Hollywood, I'd imagine, plays no part in peoples hate for America. Hollywood provides entertainment is, in the main, looked at as one of the positive things that America exports. Sure it might get some criticism from some, but I doubt it is a real reason for hate. Personally, I find it absurd to hate a country, but the reason America is hated (by some, or many), is because of the warmongering and the fact they have the most aggressive foreign policy in the world, and have probably killed more people than any other country in recent decades, and what is worse is a lot of American Christians on this site seem to support this.

I prefer the "Iron Hymen" and "Sex is for Faags" ranges, myself. (Me, dodging the swear filter? No, seriously.)

It seems somehow paradoxical that one must stare at a particular anatomical region in order to read a message dissuading the use of said region.

Men value control over what they have. Many men around the world have control over their homes and their women. American pumps out the opposite of this around the world 24/7 on cable/satelite tv. Imagine your great grandfather watching cable tv and you get an idea of what the rest of the world thinks of America. Sure Pam Anderson looks good on baywatch but you don't want your wife or daughter out there...

"Saving sex for marriage means that instead of feeling guilty that your wedding night will not be something special, you can have the fireworks-filled honeymoon of your dreams!"

LOL

Yeah, my wedding night was the stuff of legend! Room service hot wings because we were both to amped at the reception to eat much and we both passed out around midnight watching some old sit-com after a stress filled day that started around 6 am.
