“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.” (1 Peter 2:9-12 ESV)

These words are addressed here to the elect of God, his saints, his holy ones, his called out ones who are to be living holy lives pleasing to the Lord, separate (unlike, different) from the world because we are being made to be like Jesus in character, of the Spirit of God, as we cooperate fully with God’s work of grace in our lives. For we are called to obedience to Jesus Christ and to his New Covenant commands, as well as to the forsaking of our sins.

We who believe in Jesus Christ with genuine God-persuaded faith in our Lord are to be those who have died with Christ to sin and who are now living to him and to his righteousness. So, we are to put away all malice, deceit, hypocrisy, slander, murder, immorality, idolatry, adultery, and the like. And we are to long after the pure word of God in the Scriptures so that we may know God’s will, and so that we may walk in obedience to his commands.

For God has chosen us out of the world to be his holy people for his own possession. Not only are we to be living lives separate from the world, in holy living, and in walks of obedience to his commands, but we are to be his messengers in proclaiming the excellencies of our Lord who called us out of darkness (sin) into his marvelous light (truth, righteousness, Jesus Christ). We are to be sharing the truth of the gospel with the people of the world.

And the truth is what Jesus Christ and the NT apostles taught (in context). And they taught that coming to faith in Jesus Christ means us dying with Christ to sin, forsaking our sinful practices, and now walking in obedience to his commands, in practice. For if we continue walking in sin, in deliberate and habitual sin against God, and against our fellow humans, we will not inherit eternal life with God, regardless of what our lips profess.

This is the truth that we are to be proclaiming, not the watered-down “gospel” message so popularized in America today. For we are not saved from our sins and promised heaven as our eternal destiny based off lip service only. We cannot just profess him as Lord and Savior, and then acknowledge what he did for us on the cross, and now we are saved and on our way to heaven. We must die to sin and obey our Lord’s commands.

For the mercy of God is not just getting a free pass into heaven. Do any of us deserve his salvation? No! Can we do anything to earn it? No! But by faith in Jesus Christ, by God’s grace, we are delivered out of our addiction to sin so that we can now serve God with our lives in doing what he says to do. But this involves us surrendering our lives to the Lord and submitting to his will and obeying him and his commands, in his power, as part of saving grace.

Therefore, while we live on this earth as strangers (not one with the world), we are commanded that we are to abstain (refrain) from the passions of the flesh which wage war against our souls. We are no longer to be engaged in lying, cheating, stealing, sexual immorality, trickery, adultery, idolatry, and/or murder, and the like. These are to be put out of our lives so that we can now live for our Lord in doing his will and purpose for our lives.

And when our walks of faith and obedience to our Lord are genuine, for our lives are surrendered to his will and purpose for our lives, this will serve as a testimony to others as to what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. For it is not in lip service only, but in action, and in deed (see Ephesians 2:8-10 and Titus 2:11-14). And, via our walks of faith, this may lead other people to genuine faith in the Lord who die with him to sin and obey his commands.

Not I, but Christ

By Ada A. Whiddington / A. B. Simpson

… I no longer live, but Christ lives in me… (Galatians 2:20 NIV)

Not I, but Christ be honored, loved, exalted,
Not I, but Christ be seen, be known, be heard;
Not I, but Christ in every look and action,
Not I, but Christ in every thought and word.

Not I, but Christ to gently soothe in sorrow,
Not I, but Christ to wipe the falling tear;
Not I, but Christ to lift the weary burden,
Not I, but Christ to hush away all fear.

Christ, only Christ, no idle word e'er falling,
Christ, only Christ, no needless bustling sound;
Christ, only Christ, no self-important bearing,
Christ, only Christ, no trace of “I” be found.

Not I, but Christ my every need supplying,
Not I, but Christ my strength and health to be;
Christ, only Christ, for spirit, soul, and body,
Christ, only Christ, live then Thy life in me.

Christ, only Christ, ere long will fill my vision,
Glory excelling soon, full soon I'll see;
Christ, only Christ, my every wish fulfilling,
Christ, only Christ, my all in all to be.

Oh, to be saved from myself, dear Lord,
Oh, to be lost in Thee,
Oh, that it might be no more I,
But Christ that lives in me.

Amen... it is not about being legalistic or religious. It is about overcoming the flesh and behaving like the child of the King. We are not animals, and we should not live eating pig food.
I wrote a book years ago titled "How to Never Sin Again." Our goal in life should be to be righteous and holy before God in the world. The heart should ache for righteousness. Sin and the flesh should sicken us.

God has given us everything we need to live a sinless life.

1 John 3:9 KJV
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

The part of us that was born again is the seed of God in our being. If we follow the inclinations of our reborn spirit, we will never sin. But if we follow the worldly part - our flesh, we will not please God.

1 John 2:16 KJV
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

Thank you for this timely teaching. This topic should be a driving factor in our lives.
Jesus is our friend in that He gave His life for each of us.

I want to be a friend of Jesus:

John 15:13-15 KJV
13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
14 Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
15 Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

John 14:21 KJV
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

I pray this continually with tears... that I might please Him and be found worthy to be - His friend.

"My dearest friend in heaven, You have been a friend to me. Help to be counted worthy to be your friend..." :pensive::prayer:

I try... and have been for many years. I have not. But thanks be to God that:

1 John 1:9 KJV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 2:1-2 KJV
1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:
2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

I have to say I spend a great deal of my life clinging to these verses. For a long time, it bothered me that it seemed I could never "get it right." I prayed again and again that I would be a righteous and holy man for Him. Eventually, I resolved (not resigned) that there is the flesh, and according to the scripture, the lust of it is "manifest."

Galatians 5:19-21 KJV
19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

I just resolve that the confession of known sin results in the forgiving and cleansing of ALL unrighteousness.

1 John 1:9 KJV
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

I am reminded that we are but dirt... and that part of us has not been eliminated yet.

Psalms 103:9-10 KJV
9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

Psalms 103:13-16 KJV
13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.
14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.
16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

We are fragile and in such darkness in this world. I am not making a way for sin... only to say that He knows our plight. All we can do is walk in the light of His redemption in the cross. If we walk in that light, His blood will continually cleanse us from all sin, known, unknown, and hidden.

1 John 1:7-8 KJV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

So even tho the sin is there... walking in the l right of the gospel will keep us.

I am getting happy writing this!
But if I were to enumerate a "sin that easily besets me," I would have to say "lust of the eyes." Earlier in my life, it was porn. Even since I was a child. But I discovered the Lord has provided a way to escape. This is something we all have to fight. But the hope lies in 1 Corin 10:13

1 Corinthians 10:13 KJV
13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

All temptations are common to all men, but God is faithful! He will always provide a way of escape. I always tell people fighting sin to "Look for His escape route!" That is my faith confession. We can have faith in God's faithfulness. "The Lord provides an escape route from temptation!"

If one is still committing sin, they are not walking in the light that is God. (1 John 1:5)
Look for the escapes, instead of defending disobedience to God.

If one is still committing sin, they are not walking in the light that is God. (1 John 1:5)
Look for the escapes, instead of defending disobedience to God.

Forgive me, but I feel compelled to point out that everyone continues to commit sin. In Orthodoxy we confess as a congregation to being the first among sinners in the pre-communion prayer, before partaking of the Body and Blood of our Lord. Anglicans likewise (except in some liberal parishes) confess, in Mattins, Evensong and Holy Communion, to having sinned grievously, and to having left undone that which they ought to have done, and to have done that which they have ought not to have done.

This fact was also the basis, as @MarkRohfrietsch recently finally made me understand (as it took me a while, due to the challenging language) behind the oft misunderstood remarks of Martin Luther that begin with “Sin boldly…” which he can explain.

That said, all traditional Christians believe that through the grace of God, that we can improve, however, even if we do overcome a sinful passion like gluttony or wrath, the danger then is that we will fall into the sin of pride at our accomplishment. Therefore, we must work with the Holy Spirit to help us to do better. Depending on the church, one believes that this work of sanctification is either done by the Holy Spirit alone (which is the Calvinist view and I think of Lutherans, if I understand their idea of monergism) or by cooperation with the Holy Spirit (the view of the Orthodox and Methodists) with Anglicans likely having both views, and the Roman Catholic view being somewhere in the middle (since compared to the Orthodox they are monergist, but compared to Calvinists they are not, due to the influence in the Western church of the theology of St. Augustine of Hippo versus the less monergistic St. John Cassian).

However, to say we overcome sin on our own with God only showing us the way is actually Pelagian. Pelagius was a fifth century man originally from Brittania, who taught the idea, which was rejected by the early church, but he was not burned at the stake, since the early church was not like that (when Emperor Theodosius executed someone for heresy, the bishops of the Western church tried to stop it), although he was forced to leave Jerusalem (and interestingly, St. Cyril of Alexandria, who had, along with St. Augustine, St. John Cassian and St. Celestine, successfully opposed him as well as Nestorius at the Third Ecumenical Synod in Ephesus, arranged for him to resettle in Egypt, which in the fifth century was one of the nicest and safest places to live anywhere, with Alexandria widely regarded as the most beautiful of the major cities of the Roman Empire and the Near East).

This thread had a small clean up of off topic posts. Please carry on with the topic in the OP.
FreeinChrist, would you define for me "a small clean up of off topic posts"? I am not comprehending your meaning. Thank you. How do you perform a "small clean up of off topic posts," and how do you determine what is or is not "off topic"? Just trying to understand. Thank you.
