Legislators are being urged to repeal sections of the more than century-old Offences Against the Person Act which prevent Jamaican women from legally terminating pregnancies.

The appeal came from a group of experts in human rights in patient care at yesterday's Jamaica Observer Monday Exchange, ahead of International Day for Maternal Health and Rights being observed tomorrow.

“Unsafe abortion accounts for the third leading cause of maternal death. And why this is important is that maternal deaths and under-five deaths are sensitive measures of the quality of our health care,” said Professor Wendel Abel, head of The University of the West Indies (UWI) Department of Community Health and Psychiatry.

Unsafe abortions? Isn't abortion a crime in Jamaica and therefore persons that attempt or have aborted their child should be arrested, including the doctors who do the abortions. Why is it that certain laws in Jamaica are ignored? Is abortion legal? When did abortion become legal? Why are judges, the police in Jamaica silent about this breach of the law while enforcing others?

The life of the unborn needs to be protected. The life of a child is more important than the life of the mother.

I want to recommend a book to Christians worldwide entitled "New Age Lies To Women" by Wanda Marrs. Christians need to keep themselves fully informed about what is really going on.

I can't agree with this - we respect the sanctity of every human life, if we start creating a hierarchy then we are on very dangerous ground.
