To be used in instances where abortion is already available.

Whether to allow this pill to be used as the means of abortion is a medical, not a moral, question.

The question of if and under what circumstances abortion should be allowed is an entirely separate debate.

I don't support abortion (except in extreme circumstances), but to make it available but then not allow it to be done in the best possible way is medically and morally indefensable.

Is this the Morning After Pill or something else?
Something else.

It's a pill called RU-486, that is used instead of performing an abortion surgically. It still requires medical supervision and follow up, but it much safer in many instances than surgury, can be offered in small country town hospitals, and is widely used around the world where it has been shown to be at least as safe, if not safer, than the alternative.

It is a medical alternative to surgical abortions. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's use (or not) should have been left to usual medical councils to decide. It is only a political issue because Tony Abbott can't leave his own half-baked prejudices out of anything.

RU486 and Methotrexate - 5 to 9 weeks of pregnancy

These are abortion drugs taken orally by the mother. When taken with another drug called prostaglandin, they are 90 to 95% effective in causing an abortion. RU486 works by preventing nutrients from reaching the baby through the placenta, thus causing starvation within a few days. Methotrexate works within the same time frame but directly poisons the baby, causing his or her death. The prostaglandin drug is used to cause hard labor, thus dispelling the shriveled body of the dead baby.

It's a horrible thing that should be illegal along with other forms of abortion.
IMO

You've got the gist of it; it should have the same standing as any other form of abortion. If surgical abortions are available, RU-486 should be available.

Whether nor not you allow abortions, and under what conditions, is an entirely separate debate and must have no bearing on the licensing of RU-486 to perform whatever abortions are allowed.

Unfortunately some of our senior politicians have completely lost sight of any ability to make a decision unclouded by their personal ideologies.
