The Lord said in Matthew 24: 14 - 15 "And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
24:15 "Therefore when you see the 'abomination of desolation,' spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place" (whoever reads, let him understand),

This is an important sign, among others, before the end-of-time.

What is meant by abomination of desolation? Is it the last sign?

Greetings Proact,

A simple comparison between Matthew and Luke's records shows that the initial fulfilment of Daniel's prophecy is the Roman army which destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple in AD 70.
Matthew 24:15-17 (KJV): "15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains : 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house :
Luke 21:20-24 (KJV): "20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh . 21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto . 22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled . 23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give succour, in those days ! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people . 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled ."

I also believe in a latter day invasion of the Holy Land and attempted subjection of Jerusalem Zechariah 14:1-2, but the warning of Matthew 24, Luke 21 to flee Jerusalem will not be applicable to the believer as the vast majority of believers today are amongst the Gentiles. The outcome will also be different because Jesus will intervene and overthrow these nations that grasp at Jerusalem.

Kind regards
Trevor

Abomination (Gk. bdelugma) refers to that which is abhorrent, detestable, and utterly repulsive to God. It is used in Revelation 17:4-5 of the false religious system known as Mystery Babylon, the harlot. It is used in Revelation 21:27, which says there will be nothing in heaven that is repulsive to God. In the Old Testament, the concept of abomination is predominantly associated with heathen idols--false gods that are detestable to the one true God. The abomination of desolation will be an idolatrous act that will defile the Holy Place.

This will be the beginning of the tribulation that the world has never seen before..

Antiochus Epiphanes set up the image of a Greek god; the Antichrist will set up an image of himself. As Paul tells us in 2 Thessalonians 2:4, he will be the one who "exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshiped, so that he, as God, sitteth in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God." The Antichrist will actually set himself up to be worshiped as God. That is the abomination of desolation.

Abomination of Desolation is the practice of pagan worship by God's professed people.

It had happened twice: 1. When the Israelites worshipped pagan gods, Babylonian came and desolated Jerusalem. 2. When the jews ultimately rejected Jesus, the Romans came and destroyed the temple and the city.

It will happen again in the end, when God's professed Christians forsake the commands of God and take up flag, the mark of the beast.

We have a winner! You beat me to it, biblically speaking, this is the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel.

Daniel 11:30-39
"For ships of Kittim will come against him; therefore he will be disheartened and will return and become enraged at the holy covenant and take action; so he will come back and show regard for those who forsake the holy covenant. "Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice And they will set up the abomination of desolation. "By smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will display strength and take action.

"Those who have insight among the people will give understanding to the many; yet they will fall by sword and by flame, by captivity and by plunder for many days. "Now when they fall they will be granted a little help, and many will join with them in hypocrisy. "Some of those who have insight will fall, in order to refine, purge and make them pure until the end time; because it is still to come at the appointed time.

"Then the king will do as he pleases, and he will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will speak monstrous things against the God of gods; and he will prosper until the indignation is finished, for that which is decreed will be done. "He will show no regard for the gods of his fathers or for the desire of women, nor will he show regard for any other god; for he will magnify himself above them all.

"But instead he will honor a god of fortresses, a god whom his fathers did not know; he will honor him with gold, silver, costly stones and treasures. "He will take action against the strongest of fortresses with the help of a foreign god; he will give great honor to those who acknowledge him and will cause them to rule over the many, and will parcel out land for a price.
Daniel 12:10-12
"Many will be purged, purified and refined, but the wicked will act wickedly; and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand. "From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. "How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1,335 days!

Abomination of Desolation is the practice of pagan worship by God's professed people...

It will happen again in the end, when God's professed Christians forsake the commands of God and take up flag, the mark of the beast.

Um, where is it say that?

The abomination of desolation was still future when Jesus spoke:
Matthew 24:15-16 (KJV): "15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:"

Grace be with you Trevor,

You are correct in saying that this is a future event; I did not deny that, I only shared what Daniel had to say about the event. When we see this taking place again, "where it ought not" then know that Christ return is here.

Here's a question for you, will this event take place before or after the Rapture?

What is meant by abomination of desolation? Is it the last sign?

"Abomination of desolation" is a desecration of God's temple in Jerusalem (Dan 9:27; Dan 11:31; Dan 12:11). Historically it has been applied as a partial fulfillment to what Antiochus Ephiphanes did in 167 BC. Antiochus desecrated the temple by having pigs sacrificed on the altar. The Jews purified and restored the temple in 164 BC.

When Jesus spoke of a future "abomination of desolation." That is why the events of 167 BC are seen as a partial fulfillment. Some Christians apply the complete fulfillment to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Others do not see any fulfillment in 70 AD, only a future and final fulfillment. Others see the 70 AD destruction as another partial fulfillment, and there will be a future final fulfillment.

Those that see a future event believe that it is during the Tribulation when the AntiChrist will set himself up as God in the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. The related Scripture is:

2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not arrive until the rebellion comes and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. 4 He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, and as a result he takes his seat in God's temple, displaying himself as God.

I do not believe in the Rapture, but I do believe that the faithful will be gathered out before the full effect of the troubles in Jerusalem as per:
Isaiah 26:20-21 (KJV): "20 Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. 21 For, behold, the LORD cometh out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain."
"Those that see a future event believe that it is during the Tribulation when the AntiChrist will set himself up as God in the rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. The related Scripture is:

I believe in a future fulfilment, but the temple will only be rebuilt by Jesus. Some will oppose Christ in that day because of their wrong identification of the AntiChrist.

Kind regards
Trevor

The Abomination that causes Desolation

I've never been happy with the commonly held interpretation of Daniel 9:27. Most translations do not make any sense at all and cannot be comfortably placed over history. Recently, I’ve been studying the history of the Temple and have gotten some insights on a different interpretation. Daniel mentions the abomination that causes desolation in two different places. I suspect that both places refer to the destruction of two different temples.

The first account is when Antiochus invaded Jerusalem and set up an Image of Zeus in the Temple. Swine were sacrificed on the alter and the fat smeared upon the walls. This was the first abomination. So what was the following desolation? Just this - Jerusalem was empty of the people of God - they had been scattered - all that remained were the turncoat or "Vichy" Jews pandering to the invaders, but worse yet was the fact that when years later when the invaders were finally expelled - the Temple was so defiled that it was finally completely torn down and even the soil under it was removed because it was so corrupted. The old defiled temple was totally dismantled and disposed of and it was then totally replaced by Simon the Hasmonian (actually it can be argued that Herod's Temple was the sixth temple on that site.)

Now for the second "Abomination that causes desolation." That Jesus himself referred to when he talked about the siege of Jerusalem 40 years before it happened. Here is Daniel 9:27 from the NIV, which is one of the few translations that seem to make some sense.

NIV Daniel 9:27
27 He [God]will confirm a covenant [Abrahamic] with many for one seven. In the middle of the seven he [God] will put an end to sacrifice and offering [the sacrifice of Jesus - once and for all]. And on a wing of the temple [Chamber of Hewn stones - Sanhedrin] he [God] will set up an abomination [the condemnation of Jesus] that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed [death by crucifixion] is poured out on him [Jesus - his suffering and death].

Comments:
27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one seven.
Confirmation of the already existing covenant of Abraham. Confirm, to make strong.

In the middle of the seven he will put an end to sacrifice and offering.
God did this in making the final once and for all sacrifice so that animals no longer had to be sacrificed.

And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.

This makes a lot of sense to me because a “wing” of the temple was a structure on the Temple compound. It relates to a building. May I suggest to you that this wing of the temple was the place where the Sanhedrin met, which was called the chamber of hewn stones and was probably located in the "Holy Place" of the Temple. This "chamber of hewn stones" was destroyed about the time of the crucifixion - perhaps that very same day because there was a severe earth quake the day Jesus died. The Sanhedrin had to move to other quarters when this happened.

What greater abomination could there be than for the Sanhedrin - sitting in their "wing" of the Temple - to condemn the Lord of the universe to death just for the sake of ENVY. This was the ultimate abomination of the Jewish nation and it caused the complete desolation of the Temple of God and the city itself - all that remained of the Jewish nation in 73AD was the Fortress of Antonia, which was the garrison of the Roman legion.

The Temple had been totally destroyed down to the foundations at bedrock. Remember the pinnacle of the Temple had a 450 foot high wall - the real Temple mount was actually a very high Tower. What they call the temple mount today is actually the "Fortress Antonia." Another 150 feet of wall was under the earth and went down to bedrock. So in places the total wall height was about 600 feet.

In short - the abomination was the condemnation of Jesus the perfect lamb of God. The desolation was the destruction of the Temple and the city in 70A.

I think the cross is the greatest event in the history of the world.

The common assumption is that a gentile will defile the sanctuary as in the case of Antiochus Epiphanus and Pompey yet, where is the resulting desolation?

If you consider that Eli's sons defiled the sanctuary at Shiloh by sleeping with women that kept watch at the entrance with the resulting deaths of Eli, his sons, the taking of ther ark and the prophecy that states that the Lord will once again destroy Shiloh, you have a possible alternative to the accepted interpretation.

After all, how else can you explain the verse in Revelations that state that "these who have not contaminated themselves with women?"

The second example is that of Manassah who defiles the temple with his idols, in spite of his repentence and the revival under Josiah, God states three times that he would not forgive the sin of Manassah.
The result is that after the last revival, within the same generation they were destroyed.

So, you have two gentiles that don't cause the desolation of the sanctuary and two Hebrews that do cause the desolation by God of his sanctuary.
