  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

First question..

Do we as Catholics believe that the Pope is infallible when it comes to interpretting (sp?) scripture?

And if so..

Second question..

If the Pope is supposedly infallible at intepretting Scripture, why did he misinterpret the passages about God making the sun stop moving so Gideon (maybe it was Joshua) could have more daylight to fight in battle, thinking that it meant that solar system was geocentric, when it's true that the solar system is heliocentric?

We're just discussing Galileo in history and I was thinking about this. Cus if the Pope is infallible when it comes to interpretting Scripture, why did he get this wrong?

The pope doesn’t interpret scripture.

Huh?

Welcome!

The fact is, the Pope is not infallible in science, only in matters of faith and morals, when officially defined. He is not infallible in interpreting Scripture all the time, only when as the Universal Pastor of the Church he decrees something ex cathedra, which is an official declaration of dogma.

It is possible that God stopped the earth's rotation in Joshua, or allowed a natural prodigy to occur.

Funny thing about Galileo -
The Jesuits were very interested in his new invention, the Telescope. This when many civil authorities were accusing him of witchcraft.
