Susie and two of her small children were killed by a drunk driver three summers ago. She, her husband, and family were driving down a dark country highway late at night. A drunk driver crossed over into the opposite lane and hit their van head on killing Susie and the two smaller children instantly. Her husband and son were injured but did survive.
She first came into our lives when she was only five and was a playmate of my daughter's in kindergarten. Over the years she and my girl became close friends. Susie and her family were Christians. One Christmas they made a plate of cookies and candy for our family. So when Susie invited my daughter to go to summer camp we let her go even though it was not our church's camp. This experience totally changed my daughter as she accepted Jesus as her Savior. Then the girls went to work praying for the rest of us. That spring the girls gave me a bible as a birthday present. They had pooled some of their savings from their shared paper route jobs.
Eventually my family decided to follow the Lord. I had been a committed Christian most of my life...but the Holy Spirit filled me anew and I was full of zeal for the Lord. My husband had been a churchgoer but had never gone forward to committ his life to the Lord. He did do that and now loves the Lord with his whole heart!
The last time I saw Susie was at my daughter's wedding 15 years ago. She thanked me for being such a special friend to her when she was a kid. We had a great talk then as adult to adult. She was a beautiful blessing and also a really lively, intelligent, caring, and really pretty woman.
After Susie died my daughter, who was a CEO, cut back on her hours and stepped down from her position just to have more time for her family. I think she realized the preciousness of life and the moments we need for family more than she had ever before...all because of this tragic loss.
Sue's husband testified that when the family took that fatal drive they had just stopped a few minutes before to look out at the stars. It was their last time together as a family. Her husband and son now live out of state.
Little did I think that we would lose Susie in this tragic way, and we will always cherish her memory and those precious years we were so close. I know she would want me to celebrate her life...so I give her tribute here. Because of Susie and her family we were led to the Lord and our lives were changed forever. We are all better folks for one wonderful neighbor girl who has gone home now but is so well remembered. Thank you God...
