A "tongue" is a "mode of communication".
An "unknown tongue" is something communicated that is not readily understood.
I believe the "Word of God" is an "unknown tongue", to the natural man..."dark sayings, parables, proverbs", to him..."according to his faith, be it unto him", small faith, small profit, no faith, no profit, from "the Word", Heb 4:2.
The Spirit can interpret, make intelligible, spiritual things, to the inward man, they "speak the same language" so to speak.
The Flesh remains clueless, but you've got to jolly him along, the Spirit can't participate in fellowship with other beings, without his Flesh.
I suggest that REAL "unknown tongues" are Art...a mode of expression that DISGUISES the most significant intent, to hide it from those who would destroy it, and only a like mind can "interpret". As having a treasure in an earthen vessel, the Art of God, it is His Glory to conceal a thing, surely thou art a God that hidest thyself, it is the honor of kings to search out a matter, Christ hath made us kings, Prov 25:2, Is 45:14, Rev 1:6.
An example, WORKING ON THE RAILROAD. I am PRETTY SURE that was written by an "artist"...with a message to communicate...to the hearts of like minds...whether he consciously meant to do so or not...every old "folk song" seems this way to me, but just listen:

JUST TO PASS THE TIME AWAY
Can't you hear the whistle blowin?

Dinah, means JUSTICE...and the only daughter of Jacob named..or mentioned...when the Gentiles tried to engage her, they were destroyed...only "Israel"...the Son of God can "wed" her and live to tell about it, lol. (That story has bothered me for SO LONG...esp that line, "you have made me to stink among the inhabitants of the land!" But now I've GOT IT!)
"Workin on the railroad", well that's just "sore travail", to me, hard work, Eccl 1:13...and a train is such a symbol for something that you cannot withstand, the momentum is too great...common symbol in many artistic expressions.
"All the live long day"...we are destroyed all the day long, Rom 8.
"Just to pass the time away", "occupy till I come."

The Captain shouts BLOW YOUR HORN...ok here it gets very SIGNIFICANT...to me a person's "Horn" is his BIRTHRIGHT, his Peculiar Distinctiveness, we are here to MANIFEST our Unique character...everyone will "hate" you, everyone is uneasy "standing alone" and really wants a FOLLOWER for his own vision, not some Competitor...because of Weak Faith, in themselves and in the One Above us All...but nevertheless, it is REQUIRED in a Steward that a man be found FAITHFUL, be thou faithful unto death, to not DESPISE YOUR BIRTHRIGHT but to remain Upright in your Integrity...God forbid that I should justify you, till I die I will not remove mine Integrity from me, Job 27:5...Job DID "remove his integrity"...before God Himself...but not before his own kind, no matter how they badgered him, in his weakened state, he held FAST.
"Dinah" has to be IMPLORED to "blow her horn", three times...two times...SIX TIMES...and she BLOWS because Someone's in the Kitchen with Dinah, JUST AS SHADRACH MESCHACH AND ABEDNEGO WERE NOT ALONE IN THAT FIERY FURNACE.
And this "Someone" is playing her tune, on the banjo, singing an accompaniment to her "horn" blowing.
Dinah...as Justice...a symbol for the Rectitude of God, the Righteousness, the Uprightness...each person has a piece to manifest, or die trying, God is very very LARGE and COMLEX, the "Manifold Wisdom of God", Eph 3:8-11.
I cannot credit what is generally called "speaking in tongues", but who made me God over them...and vice versa...if before God a person believes there is meaning in what he is doing, go for it, I guess.
