  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I know. I have such a hard time finding books that suck me in as deep as this one did. I also like Tyrion very much! Have you ever read Robin Hobb's novels? Hers are very, very good as well. Robert Jordan disappoints me now.

I'd easily put A Song of Ice and Fire well over Lord of the Rings. So much depth to it, and the characters are a lot darker. It's an enjoyable series of books, and I sincerely hope George finishes it!

My favorite POV are Bran, Jon, and Tyrion.

Several languages is rather intense for a book, but one must admit that we are in agreement that these series are close in depth, and we are only halfway down with ASOIAF.

I love Martin's unconventional approaches, like allowing major characters to die. That's something you don't find too often in the fantasy genre. And after seeing about a dozen heroes/heroines escaping from every single life-threatening situation they're in, it becomes kinda lame.

Oh yikes, I totally forgot about her. It's been a little too long since I read the series so far. I'd forgotten about Arya. I prefer her to Bran by quite a bit.

yech... I despise what I have read of this series... I tried reading the first one, but only got about half way through it before it annoyed me enough to stop reading... I'd say he's about on par with Robin Hobb as far as how much I dislike their work, and for pretty much the same reasons.

Ah, I was considering picking up the Farseer-Trilogy, but wasn't too sure if it's actually good. I've read too many cheaply written fantasy novels to be very daring in this matter. But if Hobb's work even comes close to Martin's novels, I'm definitely in!

Hobb and Martin are both excellent in character development. Martin's politics and plotting are much better, however, while Hobb concentrates more on character interaction and their relationships to one another. But I love the main character from Farseer, so whatever he is doing fascinates me.
