When man fell they began their downward spiral away from God. Many people understand how it's wrong to lie, steal and kill as seen in the last six commandments. Even the Gentiles, who were not given the Law in detail do things that are containied in the Law because certain things are part of our nature as God's creation. But when it comes to personally knowing God, we have to be taught as seen in the first four commandments.
Israel had been in slavery in Egypt for hunderds of years before God delivered them. Because of this they were entrenched in pagan beliefs and practices.
When God delivered them the first thing He did was test them to see if they would keep His Sabbath holy.
Exodus 16:4-5 Then the Lord said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you. And the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in My law or not. "And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.''
Notice God was testing them to see if they would walk in His Law. God gave them bread from heaven six days in a row and on the sixth day they were to gather twice as much. Why is this? Because the seventh day was the Sabbath. The same seventh day that God blessed, sanctifed and called holy at creation.
Exodus 16:22-30 And so it was, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses. Then he said to them, "This is what the Lord has said: `Tomorrow is a Sabbath rest, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. So they laid it up till morning, as Moses commanded; and it did not stink, nor were there any worms in it. Then Moses said, "Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field. "Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there will be none.'' Now it happened that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none. And the Lord said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My laws? "See! For the Lord has given you the Sabbath; therefore He gives you on the sixth day bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place; let no man go out of his place on the seventh day.'' So the people rested on the seventh day.
Now at Mt.Sinai, God writes His Law in stone. These were not new Laws because these things were sin before Sinai. In the Law God writes, "Remember the Sabbath day" pointing us back to the day He blessed and sanctified at creation.
Under the Old Covenant, the Law on stone was a burden because it influenced the actions of sinfill man through fear of death. If you broke one of the Ten Commandments, including the Sabbath, you were to be put to death.
Exodus 31:14 'You shall keep the Sabbath, therefore, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death'.
Under the New Covenant we have the ministry of the indwelling Spirit. God is able to write His Law on our heart and empower us by His indwelling Spirit to obey them through love.
Ezekiel 36:26-28 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. "I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to obey my laws, and you will keep My judgments and do them. "Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; you shall be My people, and I will be your God.
Jeremiah 31:33 "But this is the new covenant that I will make with the house of Israel: After those days, says the Lord, I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Hebrews 8:10 "For this is the new covenant that I will make with the house of Israel: After those days,'' says the Lord, "I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
When God gives us His Spirit, to live inside us, He will empower us to keep the Ten Commandemts, including the fourth one. We won't keep them out of fear of punishment on judgement day, but rather, because we love God.
1 John 4:17-18 Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness in the day of judgment; because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Jesus is Lord of that very same Sabbath, which makes the Sabbath the Lord's Day. So if Jesus is your Lord then the Sabbath Day should be a day to remember.
