The story of the firery serpents has alot of implications. It can still be found in the medical field today, some show a serpent and some show a man.
Why did the serpent heal people who looked at it?
Why did it become a bad thing after a while?
Why serpents? They used to be the most beautiful creature in the garden.
B'mid'bar/Numbers 21
"6) And Hashem sent N'chashim ha S'raphim (fiery serpents) among the people; and they bit the people, and many people of Yis'rael died. 7) And the people came in to Mosheh and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against Hashem, and against you. Pray to Hashem, and He shall turn the serpent away from us. And Mosheh prayed on behalf of the people. 8) And Hashem spoke to Mosheh, Make yourself a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that when anyone is bitten, when he sees it, he shall live. 9) And Mosheh made a N'chash N'chosheth (serpent of bronze) and put it on a pole; and it happened, if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the N'chash ha N'chosheth (bronze serpent), he lived."
In the Hebrew the Bronze (or Copper) Serpent is N'chash N'chosheth. These two words are similar in spelling (Nun-Cheth-Shin) except that N'chosheth has a Thav. It may very well be that the Bronze Serpent was made of this material because it was the same colour as the Fiery Serpents that were biting the people. As a foreshadow of the things to come in Messiah, this is very important. As we know, Messiah compared Himself to it in John 3:14,15:
"14)And as Mosheh lifted up the Serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Ben ha Adam (Son of Man) be lifted up, 15) that whoever believes into Him should not perish but have Life Everlasting."
I am of the opinion that these parallel greatly:
Sin represented by the serpents. Looking upon the Bronze Serpent and living is the same as Believing into Yeshua and being saved. And Yeshua himself being the Bronze Serpent, which was made in the likeness of the serpents that were attacking the people, represents Him becoming sin for us. As it is written:
21) For to this you were called, because Mashi'ach also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: 22) "Who committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth"; 23) who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24)who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.
(1 Peter 2:21-24)
And:
20) Now then, we are ambassadors for Mashi'ach, as though Elohim (G`d) were pleading through us: we implore you on behalf of Mashi'ach, be reconciled to Elohim (G`d). 21) For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of Elohim (G`d) in Him.
2 Corinthians 5:20,21)
