• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

We were with a group of parents the other evening and someone asked if you thought your teenage son or daughter was gay would or should you confront them.
None of us could agree. I felt that it would be a good thing for a Christian parent to do. But some of the others thought that it would embarrass or hurt the child.
What do you think?
Thank you for your help.
God Bless

The issue of the question lies in "you think". things of that nature need verification before you accost the person, so if I was in their seat, I would adopt the wait and see position. It doesnt work for all situations, but what reasons are you going to give the child for such thought, and it could create unbalance. I can't imagine my mom coming to my room to say she thinks I am gay, if she doesnt have evidence, then all I can do is say no. Some men behave effeminate and vice versa for women, but then asking them if they are gay for that is kind of a big jump. So unless they have proof or the child opens up, they cant do much.

What bothers me about all of this is the concept of addressing the situation because you think the person may be gay. Maybe the child is just "artsy" or a "tom-boy." Neither of these traits make someone gay. Start accosting the child about those things and then the child becomes afraid of doing anything for fear of being labled. Love your children, not lable them!
