  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question to Atheists...

I would like to ask a question of atheists who post on these forums. A lot has been made of evolution not having anything to do with origins (abiogenesis) but that it only works after life has begun. With that being said, where do you personally feel life originated from? This is not an attack, or even a true debate. I am genuinely curious. I may offer my input from time to time, and of course anyone can freely discuss what's brought up, but mostly I am just curious. Thanks!

I'm quite sure I don't fall within the category of atheist but I'll chip in anyways.

I don't 'feel' anything regarding the origin of life, but I think abiogenesis is both plausible and sensible.

Ok, that's 4 for abiogenesis...maybe this should've been a poll...hmm. That being said, how do you believe it happened? I've heard the usual primordial soup thing, and I've also heard a theory that it happend on the back of a crystal...any thoughts?

Not an Atheists but we don't know yet, though we do have multiple Hypothesis that they're testing.

The above WiKi link gave a good list of the strongest models that they're currently working with.

Oh, I also wanted to know what you thought on the probability of abiogenesis, and how it occurred. Maybe that clarifies?

May God Richly Bless You! MM

The fact that it happened tells us that calculating it's probability is a futile exercise.

If we knew exactly how it happened we probably wouldn't be having this conversation, so why ask?

I have no idea. Then again, for me personally claims like "It´s miraculous" or "God breathed life into them" would not really qualify as explanations as to how it occurred.

That's why asked how do you BELIEVE it happened. I'm more looking for each individuals ideas, not a direct scientific discussion.

Unless of course God truly exists. I only ask because its been brought to my attention that its probability is statistically zero. I simply wanted to know what people thought about it.

All the scientific evidence points me to accept (I really don't like the term "believe") that it happened like this:

Abiogenesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wikipedia is wrong in calling Primordial Soup a theory though, it is a hypothesis.

Yes but the probability of you existing is statistically zero also, yet you exist.

Interesting... but why would that matter?

I am not knowledgable enough in the fields necessary to formulate or test any of such hypothesises. I don't have the knowlegde or the means to distinguish between them.

So why would I place my belief on "it was clay" or "it was primodial soup" rather then a very general "it was chemistry"?

Believe? Hmmm... That's a hard question...
I haven't made the choice to believe in anything specific about how it happened but I do believe that somewhere, sometime, someplace a bunch of molecules started replicating.
(Of course I'm open for evidence otherwise)

You should try a little experiment by yourself to see how flawed the logic of calculating the probability of past events really is. It goes like this:

1. Take a deck of 52 cards.
2. Shuffle the deck well.
3. Lay the deck down on a table and spread it in order.
4. Calculate the probability of that specific sequence being drawn.

Any idea of what are the odds for that particular sequence to be drawn? I will do the math for you: 52! (52 factorial) to 1. 52! being equal to 52x51x....x1 Now think about 10 decks... See how easy it is to come up with astronomical probabilities for events that already happened?
