And Locke went to rescue Eko with a knife. A knife - against a polar bear? Why not a gun?

At the start, the lostaways had the one pistol, belonging to the Marshal. (and used most of its ammo killing the first bear).

Then they got the Marshals case open and picked up four? more pistols, and maybe 80 rounds of ammo.

Then Locke found a gun on one of the dead drug smugglers - though that weapon didn't look to be in that great of shape, and its ammo situation was uncertain. There might or might not have been another pistol in the drug smugglers plane.

At this point, by my reckoning, thats six pistols, one of them in poor shape with uncertain ammo.

Then they got into the hatch. Now...here, I'm not sure - maybe four more pistols and half a dozen rifles? That sound about right? Call it ten pistols and six rifles at this point. Then:

Michael runs off, and several other lostaways, all armed to the teeth, follow after. They loose all the weapons they were carrying - probably four or five pistols and two or three rifles when the Others `draw the line' after capturing Michael.

Then, in the rescue mission that ended season 2, Hurly, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, and Mike between them lost at least another couple of rifles, and probably two or three more pistols.

Sayid looks to have had a rifle (maybe two?) and a couple of pistols.

So, unless there's a handgun floating around the losties camp (Sawyers stash, most likely), then the lostaways are down to one or two rifles and one or two pistols, currently in the possession of Sayid, Sun, and Jin. And with the boat stolen, the ammo situation probably ain't looking too good.

So unless they find another arms stash somewhere, or unless Sawyer and Kate grab a gun or three when they break out of `Otherville', the lostaways are almost back to where they started.

On thing I've noticed about the AKs the Others posess is that they have 30 rd. magazines while the ones in the Hatch had 5 rd. magazines. I also wonder about the shotguns they have, which appear to be hunting models* rather than police or military models like the Mossberg 500, SPAS 12 or some of the beautiful Bernelli models. It just seems odd to me that they'd have milspec AK magazines, but their shotguns would be basically made for birding or sporting clays.

* The Remington 870 was the standard military and police shotgun for decades, but I can't imagine anyone with access to the 2004 World Series relying on them.

Why is it scary that you know so much about guns.

*dora looks around for US*

I may want US as my protector instead of Sayid.

Hah! :D The difference between myself and Sayid is that during Gulf War I, he was in theater and I was in college/Artillery School. I'd probably pull a Hurley.

As far as gun knowledge goes, I'm sure a few participants in the Lost threads will get the humor of this anecdote. About two years ago I saw some posts in another forum of photos from an event where automatic weapons afficionados gather to fire of their guns (Knob Creek, KY for those in the know). I saw a photo of a guy with a Lewis Gun and recognized it immediately. I saw a photo of a guy with two strange looking machine pistols and had no idea what they were.

I was able to recognize 90-year-old machine gun technology, but a dude with a pair of auto-Glocks had me stumped since I didn't know they existed.

Yes, its an old thread.

Still...I noted that during the confrontation with our femme fatale Danielle, a couple of our lostaways were packing heat once again. Looked like a rifle and a pistol (probably the ones that were with Sayid).

Now...I don't remember...did Sawyer and Kate get away with a gun or not? Even if they did, I doubt the ammo situation is all that promising for it.

So...that would make one rifle and one or two pistols. Sound about right?

Now, Danielle has her rifle...and probably at least one other firearm (plus that nasty Benry hurting crossbow of hers). But her ammo situation is also likely in doubt, and the odds of the lostaways getting hold of one of her weapons...hmmm...

There was a whole arsenal of guns in the hatch so I think there are probably more hanging around out there that we haven't seen yet. But, Sawyer and Kate's gun(s) when they were fleeing Alcatraz ran out of bullets. I don't recall if they had them with them on the boat.

Yes, there is an arsenal of guns out there...but not under the lostaways control. What made me start this thread was when Locke went after the bear with a knife to rescue Eko. He used a knife because the lostaways were out of guns - the lostaways had managed to loose almost all of them in failed expeditions against the `others'.
