You asked the OP, but you really don't see the hard part of the idea. The hard question hidden behind your OP is not when did one life form appear and was recorded in the strata, but is WHY do they keep becoming extinct and became fossils.
Most become extinct due to extinction events, of which there are 5 major and 20 minor ones. Keep in mind that they didn't happen over night, except maybe the last major one, the CretaceousPaleogene (KPg).
Isn't it ironic that so many creationists press this idea that all living creatures are designed specifically and perfectly for their environments, and yet it is the most specialized creatures who tend to die first come an extinction event, due to their lack of versatility and ability to live in different, changing environments?

May I suggest that the problem was not the book?In an attempt to prove (to a certain person) that evolution is full of suppositions and unproven assumptions I sought out and read an article about the evolution of dinosaurs (written by a person with all sorts of initials after his name). While there were no specific instances of what I was seeking the whole article was gobbldygook. By the end of the article my head was spinning. It was disturbing to think that this was scientific evidence.
Don't most species today have to meet specific needs in order to survive?
You do not see the problem. Let me analyzed it a little for you:
God creates lives. All lives are good.
The earth is cursed, so all lives began to die. And some became extinct (at different time).
But this does not really explain the sequential fossil record in strata (why?). And this is the question in your OP. In order to answer that, we need to start it all over:
God creates lives in sequence before the earth is cursed.
So, lives died and fossils are preserved in sequence (before the earth is cursed).
..... (something about extinction events, and Adam in the Garden. Can you finish the story?)
Sorry if this makes you headache. But this is the process to match the science with the Bible.
Punctuated equilibrium? Now, explain the fossil record without evolution using science.
If from a flood they would be all mixed up in the same layers of deposition.
Punctuated equilibrium?
Are you telling me, Rick, that scientists cannot duplicate the fossil record in a laboratory, using any other method than simulated evolution?Nope! That explains diversity. I am asking how the fossil record throughout the entire geologic column come to be. The only answer I see is evolution. If not by evolution, the how. The only "how" I can think of is that they just popped into existence at just the right time and place, which is about as unscientific as one could get.

I take it that's a NO?Then I gather you can? Please proceed. I'll be refilling my coffee cup while you are doing this. Back in 5.
I take it that's a NO?
I'm asking if it can be done in a laboratory sans an evolution simulator?Scientists don't just make stuff up.

In your opinion?
(Maybe I should make this into a challenge thread, eh?)
There is a big mix of specialists, not so specialists and also very versatile species.
Prime examples of versatile species would be raccoons, bears and other mammalian omnivores.
These creatures can live on a wide variety of diets and are very adaptable. These are the types of species that tend to survive mass extinctions and then go onto split into a wide variety of new species to fill the newly vacated gaps. For instance Mammals generally after extinction event 65mya.
