Hi fellow believers

I wanted to reach out to a specific group tonight and ask Calvinists a question. So I was reading up on the puritanboard, and I noticed people years ago talking about John McMahon and some seemed very stern and aggressive, saying things like “whoever doesn’t believe Calvinism or the 5 points will go to hell” and I was suprised,I don’t deny the concept of election, perseverance of the saints, etc but I don’t call myself a Calvinist,I call myself a regular Christian.

If it’s ok,does a person have to be a Calvinist to be saved?

I had a friend here that was reformed (calvinist). He insisted we would see each other in heaven. He knew I wasn't a Calvinist so at least he didn't believe that. God bless you:)

if that was the case then no one prior to Calvin would be saved, Do you think there is any possibility of that being true?

The Reformers strengthened what had been taught in accordance with scripture, removing traditions and superstitions. There is a long list of proto "Calvinists."

Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Jacques d'Etaples, Gregory of Rimini, Hugolino of Orvieto, Juan de Valdes, Bede the Venerable, Thomas Bradwardine, Johann von Staupitz, etc. All of them lived, wrote and taught before the Reformation.

Thank you but I do not agree with your conclusions and the suggestions in the articles. This would be an excellent subject to explore in more depth.

I am not at all familiar with this man or his teaching. However, if he believes that then he himself was not a Calvinist. A Calvinist will tell you that those who will be saved, are saved by God's grace alone and not according to their works or their theology and that God's elect were chosen by Him from the foundation of the earth.

As a somewhat Calvinist I would say no. Most Calvinists don't believe this. But from the perspective of what has the person to believe or have faith in to be saved, than it makes sense (in an exaggerated fashion) that the more pure the doctrines the better the chance of true faith. This is admittedly an incredibly simplified explanation of it, and unfair to any monergistic view of salvation. But simplicity sake demands it. I still believe in monergistic salvation.

To be saved from the wrath of God on sin (Romans 5:9), a person has to be born again (John 3:7) and believe in and trust on the atoning sacrifice (blood, Romans 3:25) of Jesus Christ for the remission of one's sin and right standing with God's justice; i.e., "not guilty," declared righteous (justified) by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ, as was Abraham (Genesis 15:6, Romans 4:3), because of faith apart from faith's works (Romans 3:28).

Nothing else is required for salvation and justification.

But being saved and justified does not end there.
There follows the life of faithful obedience in the Holy Spirit which leads to imparted righteousness (Romans 6:16), leading to holiness (Romans 6:19), i.e., personal sanctification.
