  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My friend Amy has problems with substance abuse. I recently learned that they were worse than I thought. She is mixing prescription sedatives (that she doesn't have a prescription for) with alcohol.

I am so afraid what she does is going to kill her.

Also, I think she is alcoholic. She gets drunk at LEAST once a week, usually more. She's blacked out several times and has put many people in danger by doing very stupid, dangerous things while she's drunk. She likes to eat when she's drunk so she cooks things, but not very well. I find the stove and the oven turned on all the time and the things she was cooking burnt beyond recognition.

Please pray that God guides me to help her get the help she needs to get through her alcohol dependence. Please pray that God will help her not be angry with me for thinking she has a problem and trying to get help for her. And please pray that whatever help I can get for her will be effective. Please, please help me.

Please continue to remember Amy and me (Matrona) in your prayers. I am trying to work up the nerve to talk to her about her problem with alcohol.

Also, I have a tiny little suspicion--a tiny one, but it's a flicker of hope--that she might be thinking more about God now. She calls herself a "deist" but she seems genuinely curious about what compels me to go to church at 8AM on Sunday morning. And I would love to take her to church with me one Sunday (I am Orthodox). Please remember us in your prayers...
