  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey guys. I've just been noticing recently alot of us jumping into the protestant and orthodox forums and maybe offering our opinions when they really aren't called for. I notice especially that some of us are jumping in and accusing others of "Catholic bashing" when the members of those forums simply say they disagree with a particular catholic practice or catholic doctrine in general and try to explain why. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular here or pretending I'm any kind of forum sage, but I think we need to show a bit of restraint. I know that alot of us are particularly sensitive, because as Catholics, we are often misunderstood, and get a bad rap that we don't deserve, but we mustn't jump down the throats of those who disagree with us. Throwing the "Catholic bashing" accusation around without care ends up making the term meaningless, like when Jesse Jackson calls a company racist for firing a black employee who tried to burn the company down :) . I know IDD is gone, so that makes the temptation greater to jump in and offer opinions when they aren't requested, but I think we just need to be more careful. If the rest of you disagree, that's ok, but it's just something that's been bothering me a bit lately.

I agree with you. I do not want to publicly name names but I have noticed a few of our members taking offense to the slightest thing that was not intended to offend, or seems possible to be offended by - all symptoms of the attitude that Mr. Jackson has, or that the people protesting Gibson's Passion have... Some people have a tendency to jump down others' throats in some of the other congregation forums, and it does not look good, and I can't stand when I see it.
