There are so many things which divide us as a nation, as a people, and as the children of God. We are divided by hatred, violence, political affiliation, denomination, race, religion, social status, culture, belief systems, etc. We are also divided by greed, love of power, idolatry, spiritual and physical adultery, wars of men, lies, deceptions, manipulations, betrayal, and rejection of Christ and of his followers, and by false prophets and teachers of the people, and false gospels of men, etc.

This song is a call to leave our idols, our desires for wealth and power, and the things which divide us as a people of God that are not of God, such as hatred, unforgiveness, pride, adultery, and all that is called sin in the Bible. We are to turn from our sins, and we are to make the Lord Jesus Christ the Lord and master of our lives, choosing to walk with him in full surrender to his will for our lives and in obedience to his commands.

A People Divided

An Original Work / July 4, 2011

Flick’ring torches; hatred; violence;
Crashing windows; guns of men;
We are a people divided
By our love of pow’r and fame.

Idols marching; they’re in chorus;
Their goal to destroy the church,
Tempting us to follow them in
Pure devotion; them we search.

Leave your idols. Follow your God.
Make Him your Lord God and King.
Be a living witness for Him,
And your off’rings to Him bring.

Repent of your sins and worship Him.
A living sacrifice,
Put your all upon His altar.
Leave your old life way behind.

Flick’ring torches; hatred; violence;
Crashing windows; guns of men;
We are a people divided
By our love of pow’r and fame.

There is no single "us" which includes all of those things. Being careful to never forget or omit this, is very important if one is to speak truly.

If you read the prophets in the OT and the epistles in the NT and perhaps even some of Jesus' speeches, I think that you will find that they often spoke collectively of a nation or of the church in a particular location (city) and they addressed the sinful practices and issues which prevailed these particular nations or people groups or church congregations, and they listed the prevailing sins and issues collectively for these particular nations or people groups or church gatherings. This did not mean that everyone was engaged in sinful practices or that everyone was doing all the same sinful practices, but that as a whole unit these were the prevailing sins and issues which existed among them, as a whole, but not necessarily all encompassing everyone in a particular nation or gathering or people group. And I believe that is what is intended here, as well. Like my nation (the USA) is very divided and is engaged in all sorts of wars and killing people and in lies and deception, etc., plus what is called "the church" collectively here in America is very idolatrous and worldly and spiritually adulterous. But this does not mean that all of us are any or all of those things. This is a general picture of our nation, as a whole, and of the Laodicean type church that exists in America today, as a whole, but this does not include every individual nor every church congregation. And even if a church congregation is very divided, that is not to say that both sides are wrong, either. One side may be following Jesus in full obedience while the other side may be worldly and acting in opposition to the gospel and to those who are teaching it. So, as a congregation they are divided. But not all people are causing divisions. Does that make sense? Sue Love
