what would it be like if Jesus was born today??? - written possibly for a childrens book
This is a story about a young woman called Mary and her husband Joseph who lived in Syria, a country which had a lot of problems.
They wanted to leave but they couldn’t find a way out. Nobody seemed to be able to help them.
There was one way, a friend told them about, although it was very dangerous. If they took a boat across to Europe they might be able to get to England and live there.
The friend was willing to help them but they would have to give him everything they had. There would be no money or property left if they let this man help.
They didn’t like the idea very much, and they were not sure how much that man was really their friend. He did seem to be the only help they could get.
Then Mary had a dream where an angel came and told her “Do not be afraid for I bring good news. You shall have a baby next year that God has planted in you. Take the baby and go to England.”
She woke Joseph and told them who was very unhappy. “We can’t have a baby, I have never made love to you because we are not even married” he exclaimed.
At first Joseph didn’t believe her then the angel came to visit him and said “Please marry Mary for she is with the Lord’s child, his name shall be Yeshua as it was foretold.”
Joseph was frightened. In Syria, a woman could be killed if she had laid with a man without being married. Joseph did not know what to do except to marry in a hurry.
He had not wanted to marry her yet because he did not have any money at all, but he was also scared for her safety so he said “If you say we shall have a baby, then it must be. Could I marry you?”
Mary liked this idea a lot. She said “you do not need money, I can live a humble life with you on nothing at all so long as we have a love and a baby inside me to care for. “
They had a small wedding and invited just a few friends who helped them by providing food and drink. Their marriage was blessed in a place of worship so it would be done in the eyes of the Lord.
Soon after the wedding Joseph went to visit his friend and gave everything he had for a ticket so that he and Mary could escape to Europe and find their freedom. That way the baby too would be safe.
They got on a boat which was very badly made. They had to sail by night so no one would see them. If they were found they would be sent back.
The boat tossed them around as it carried them across to Italy. Throughout the hard journey Mary and Joseph held hands and prayed.
When they got through to Europe they were snuck up a beach and into the back of a truck where there was no room. Hundred of other people were all crowded in there together.
Within a week they had arrived in Calais and went to see about boarding another boat but the ferry terminal said “No! Go away. We have enough immigrants.”
Joseph said “Please, my wife is carrying the son of God. We were instructed to travel here by an angel”. But the ferry people didn’t believe them and sent them to a refugee camp called the Calais Jungle.
The Calais Jungle was almost as scary as being in Syria. People there were not friendly to each other and a lot of them were sick and in need. Volunteers rushed around trying to help everyone and provide for all the people, but they were very stretched.
A man came to see Joseph and Mary in the Calais camp. He was a Christian and he listened to their story then said “Is this the second coming? If it is then you must definitely be in a better place.”
“No” argued Joseph, “thank you, but your people have said no room. This will be adequate. Please though, bring people here who can help us to have this child.”
The man went away and came back some hours later with a Doctor and Nurse. They helped Mary to lie down and give birth. It seemed to take hours but they worked through the night until eventually out popped Yeshua.
While Mary and Joseph were in the Calais Jungle they were visited by three of the world’s religious leaders who gave big presents. They also were met by poor people who could not provide them anything but kindness.
The story got out and press all wanted to see the new holy child, but Joseph and Mary said no. “It will not do for too many people to know about this, we wish to be private.”
After a few months Joseph was given a place in England where he could continue working in carpentry. The money was not good but the family survived, and little Yeshua would be safe at last.
