hello all, i have a question for the roman catholics on here. i attend an anglican church and have recently noticed in our lady's chapel a cup overturned on top of a plate in front of the icons and state of the blessed mother. i was wondering if anyone knew what this meant? from my knowledge, in santeria this is used to "reverse" a curse of some sort.

alot of the catholics in my town are very superstitious and follow curanderas and witch doctors.

before i ask, i figured i would ask you here if this is a roman catholic practice that i am unaware of. as a roman catholic never noticed it at the parish i attended.

because i cannot post pictures as of yet (still under required post amount) i have uploaded them to an album in my profile.

thanks for any light you could shed on this!

in Christ, derek

There are some questionable superstitious practices that people do sometimes. I don't know about this one though.

Here is a similar mention: Ask Sister Mary Martha: My Cup Turneth Over but the nun says she hasn't heard of the practice and couldn't find any information on it. Is there an icon of St. Anthony of Padua there?

This is all superstition, which is a sin against the First Commandment. The superstitious, however, say it's not a sin because one cannot judge by appearances alone. But they are wrong because the sin is in the action itself.

It's odd. I've never seen or heard of this before. I'd suggest asking the pastor of your church about it. Perhaps there is local history that is not superstitious regarding this. I would not want to pass negative judgment when it could be a simple story pertinent to that parish.

I'd be interested to hear the story when you find out. :)
