This is a fan fiction but with Christian character & views. The Around the World in 80 Days belongs to Jules Verne as the characters are his but this comes from my heart and soul:
Part I: Chapter 1:Through The Eyes of a Writer
Rena MacCarran aka Ren as she was known was a writer and author.
Author of six crime novels all non fiction. Also she writes the latest news stories in over 100 papers daily.
Also to make her even more busier, she travels all over the world giving lectures about the law & the criminal mind.
Also she teaches law and journalism at a local community college. She has degrees in criminology & physcology. With a masters in journalism & minor in education.
She also was an only child. And besides spending time with her parents and watching tv mainly the cable news networks, she seemed to have no private life whatsoever.
All she did was work, speak, teach, and always has to have her laptop in front of her. Even when she is sleeping. All before the tender age of 30.
Ren also was trained in the martial arts with nearly six black belts. And she was working out on an usual weeknight. But tonight was no oridanary night. Something was going to happen not just to change her night. But to change her life forever.
Chapter 2: A Stranger Crashing Down From The Heavens:
Then as Ren was working out, she heard a sound. The wind, she thought.
Then as she went back to working out, she heard the sound again.
Then she waited for a minute or two to make sure there was nobody was trying to come and harm her.
Or even worse as these were post 9/11 times.
Then as she went back to working out. But with caution.
She lived in a duplex complex in Baltimore ironically about two stories down her parents.
Then as she was wiping the sweat she heard the strange sound. A third time. But it sounded like a loud & huge voice breathing.
Ren then started to warn the person to leave. In a polite and friendly but also firm manner.
"Whoever you are, I am going to be nice & kind. And ask you to please politely & orderly to leave the complex.
I am giving you ninety seconds. If you don't leave, I will call the police.
Or if that doesn't stop you, I will give you such a thrashing that
the first time you mess with me will be the last time. Please leave the complex immediately".
Ren was being polite but firm with the stranger.
She waited. And waited. And Waited. Then after about three minutes,
the strange noise stopped.
Ren then made sure the person left. Then it was quiet...
Then all of a sudden.....SMASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some person fell out of her porch & crashed into the window.
That person fell into her kitchen sink.
Ren yelled & was terrified that she almost called the police.
Then as she had the phone in one hand with one eye, her other eye was on the stranger. Who seemed to be all dirtied & smelled real badly.
Chapter 3: A Lonely & Broken Man
Then Ren went with caution to see the stranger badly dirtied & smelling awful.
As she looked at the man, his hair was down to his arms. His beard was also down arms length as well.
"Please help me madamoselle!!" cried the man. He sounded like he was not an American. And from a foreign country.
Ren was skeptical because she thought he was playing hurt only to get something. Or to do much worse.
"Look, sir if you are playing with me, that won't fool me at all. I teach law and when men do that, they aren't really who they seem to be.
If you are playing games I will have the police out here in nearly ten minutes and..."warned Ren.
But then she saw the man holding his ribs very hard. And mumbling & grumbling very noisly for fears that the neighbors in the complex would complain on her.
"Please help me madamoselle!! I am really, really hurt." cried the man again.
"If you are playing games with me like I said, I will......"
"No! No! If I were playing games with you I would not be in your house. Hurt and bloodied as I am." yelled the injured man
Then she saw beneath the hair, beard, & smell the man had dark and black bruises and cuts. Also he was bleeding all over his face.
Then Ren realized that he really was injured. She then felt sorry for the man.
"Listen sir, I am very, very sorry. It is just that you have to be careful with circumstances these days since this is a 9/11 world. People who say they are injured aren't really injured and hurt others. It is not that I was unsympathetic of your bruises but.."
Then the man interrupted again. "No, No, like I said I am not playing games with you. I can ensure you I am not that kind of person who fakes an injury. I.... OUCHHHHHHHHHHH!!" cried the poor man.
Then as Ren was getting the man up and helping him holding her nose due to his smell, she then put the man on her bed to rest.
Ren then question the man to determine his injury.
"Do you know who did this to you?? Suppose you told me your name??"
Then the man thought about the questions a long, long time.
"Passepartout!! Jean Passepartout!! That is all I know. But other than that, I don't know how I got injured here. Or if I got beaten up. That is all I know is my name is Jean Passepartout."
Then Ren looked at the man like if he belonged in a mental institution. She let out a huge laughter. She laughed until she cried.
The poor man looked confused like why are you laughing at me while I have been badly hurt.
"What? What did I say madamoselle to make you laugh??" asked the poor man.
"That name is the french valet in Around the World in 80 Days. The sidekick to Phileas Fogg. Ha! Ha Good one! And I am Katie Couric
"
"Well, it is true madamoselle??" cried the poor and confused man.
Then Ren stopped laughing as she looked at the poor man. He looked like he was about to cry. She noticed he seemed to be truthful.
She then felt very bad making fun of him.
"Look, I didn't mean to laugh. I am very, very sorry I didn't mean to hurt you. Please forgive me"
"Well, madamoselle your apology has been accepted. I have been through more worse before the way I look now." complemented the injured man.
Ren then changed the subject quickly. "Well, I am going to call for an ambulance to take you to the hospital and..."
Then the man got excited as Ren was dialing the phone. He quickly grabbed the phone away.
"NO! NO! No hospital. Please they would find me there. Don't know who but anyone could find and kill me. Please anywhere but there."
Ren then let the poor man, who sounded like a frenchman, have his way but with caution.
"OK, I will not let them take you to the hospital. I will call a doctor who is nearby. Either agree to him or it is the hospital?? Either way is up to you. Understand?"
The man known as Passepartout nodded and said "Oui! Oui! I mean yes! Let's do that."
CHAPTER 4: A CLOSER LOOK AT JEAN PASSEPARTOUT
As Ren called the doctor, she only got like a five minute look at the man. He obviously the way he talked was indeed a Frenchman. Ironically "Around the World in 80 Days" is Ren's favorite fiction book.
While the man who said he was "Jean Passepartout" was laying in agony, she went to get the book of 80 Days.
She looked at a picture from the 80 Days book in which he was like in the book supposed to also be strong and well built.
If you take away the beard and long hair, he was also a very handsome man. About late twenties early thirties.
He had brownish blonde curly hair. Blue eyes like the oceans. Very emotional eyes. He was indeed well built & strong due to his gymnastics past.
With very huge muscles and a chest very huge and round.
His clothes were not just dirty but also very ripped up & very bloodied.
He had on a white dress shirt with black suspenders that were nearly torn off.
He had a black overcoat with pockets. He had gray stripped pants and the only thing not ripped up was his black socks and black laced up boots.
Could this really, really be the Passepartout of 80 Days fame??
But then had to put that all aside to help the poor and beaten man.
Then she got a hold of the doctor. "Dr Shaw, this is Ren. Sorry to hate to pry you out of your card game. But I do my best not to ask for favors at anybody especially you.
But this is an emergency as some stranger came crashing in you might say into my loft window. He looks like he has been hit by a tractor trailor. But please can you come ASAP because he won't go to a hospital."(Pause)"Ok, thanks very much".
Then as she helped the man to her bed as she tried to get him to rest. Then in ten minutes Dr Shaw was there in no time with two nurses.
Ren then got the doctors coat & hat as she motioned for the doc in her room. He then gave her the look & warning.
"You know what this means Ren." says the doc
"Yeah! Kick me out of my own bedroom. Be happy I don't give you a fatlip like I did that US Attorney. So arrogant was he. He couldn't even whisper and had to eat soup for six weeks." laughed Ren
"Oh, you give me a fatlip, I will hit you with a lawsuit that you will be doing your work on pen and paper." laughed the good doc.
"Oh, I am so, so scared!!" Cried a "scared" Ren.
Then she also said that she would be going to the store to buy some clothes, bandages, health & beauty aids, and food and soft drinks for the poor Frenchman.
Because the Doctor could be in her loft for about over an hour or two and plus she could use some fresh air.
Chapter 5: Feeling Sorry for A Frenchman
Then sure enough after nearly two hours, Ren did return home. She saw the nurses about to leave as she brought stuff for the Frenchman like clothes, food, and bandages. Then Dr Shaw needed to see her in private.
"Ren, I am not going to lie to you. But that boy looks so, so pitiful. Not just on the outside but more like the inside. On the outside, he has nearly every bone broken in his body."
Then he got the x-rays as he showed her from the small machine shocked Ren as he took about over thirty x-rays.
"That boy has every bone from head to toe broken. He has a broken foot. A broken left leg. Both right. Then he has five broken ribs on the right. Two broken ribs on the left. A fractured right wrist and a broken left arm.(Ren's eyes and jaws dropped & popped out)Also a huge fractured skull." continued the doc.
"But Dr how did he survive all of that has happened to him?? I looked at his body and noticed....."
Then Dr Shaw interrupted "Don't mean to cut you short but he has huge muscles and a chest. That might have saved him. If he wasn't built that strong and big, the last place he would be is at a morgue!!"
Ren could only nod sadly and agree but she also had to worry about what the doc meant about the inside.
"What do you mean about the inside of him doc?? When I first saw him and asked him questions on how he got injured, all he could remember is his name is Jean Passepartout. You know from Around the World in 80 Days."
Dr Shaw then looked up and thought she was lying but then saw that look on her face like the man may have lost his memory. She also continued.
"How long do you think he has been wondering injured like this?? A few weeks?" she asked the good doc.
Dr Shaw, who had known Ren ever since she was a little girl, thought long and hard before giving her a precise answer.
"It seems like a month & a half Ren. He has been injured badly and miraclously wondering around for nearly two months."
"He smelled awful like he hadn't had a bath and a shave for weeks when I first saw him!!" cried a concerned and worried Ren.
"I asked him questions like you did to determine his injury. He doesn't know how he got beaten up or if like you said, if a truck ran and hit him.
He doesn't know where he lives. But sounds like he is from Europe. A Frenchman because he kept saying Monsieur or Madamoselle.
He doesn't know the day, month, or year he is in. Or if he is from this century because he sounds like he doesn't belong in the year 2004. More like the 19th century.
He has a different kind of memory loss called Retograde amnesia like that film "Regarding Henry". He now has to learn to do things that you and I normally take for granted. Like use the toilet, brush his teeth, eat from silverware."
"How long do you think that would take him to do that?? Weeks, months??" asked Ren.
"Probably for the rest of that young man's life. He has the body of his age. But the mind and heart of a four year old. His skull was so, so fractured that it didn't nearly left enough oxygen in the brain.
If the oxygen in the brain wasn't there, that boy wouldn't be alive as we speak. Listen it is getting late. Why don't you take him to the hospital. Only tell him it will be for all morning and afternoon. To get him showered also and shaved."
"Thanks doctor but what about that conference you have at Children's Hospital tomorrow and..."
"Oh don't worry I can get another doctor at Memorial Hospital. His name is Dr Gregory. He is very nice and an Irishman. But what about your conferences and...."
"No, I can cancel them. My agent who also is my publisher will understand sicne this is the first time I have cancelled ever since I started speaking and talking since I was 10. At least three weeks to care for him and to make sure he gets the care and rest he needs. And maybe even more. But I won't let that poor frenchman be miserable for the rest of his life. What time should be good?"
"About 7:00 am since I know you are an early riser. Well, good to be of your assistance and please don't hesistate to call me again."
"Well, I am so, so sorry again about your poker but this was so, so important that this man be cared for."
"Well, I can play poker anyday at anytime. Well, keep an eye on this boy. Good night and God bless Ren"
Then as she let the good doc out, she watched as the poor frenchman got some rest. The first time he has had a great rest in who knows how long.
"Don't worry son, I will take good care of you no matter what occurs."
whispered Ren inside her head.
Chapter 6: Welcome to the 21st Century Jean Passepartout!!
The next day Ren loaded up her car and had to wake up her "patient" Jean Passepartout. "Poor man" she thought. He hadn't had a good night sleep in what seems forever.
She had to wake up at five in the morning. Call her agent who ironically
happens to be her publisher, editor, lawyer, and best friend all at one time.
Her agent thought that was a new "man" in her life for the ultra competitive & workaholic Ren.
"Come on cut it out Toby!! He is so badly injured that he has broken every bone you can think of in his body. Also he has two black eyes.(Pause)Yes
two black eyes, a fatlip, and a broken nose.
Look I need at least three weeks off and then if he needs more attention, then I will call you beforehand in 48 hours.
(Pause again)OK Toby, this is a big, big favor that you can do for me since I hardly ask for favors. But it is about this poor Frenchman.
He was near death. Now he needs help since he has amnesia. To make the long story short he has a different kind of amnesia where he has to do small things like learn to use the bathroom, bathe, use silverware. You know the kind of things you and I take for granted(Pause a long time).
OK, three weeks and I will phone you if I need anymore time. Thanks Toby. Good-bye"
Then she loaded him into the black corvette. The car looked oblivious to him.
As he looked at the car like the car was like a brand new "object to him".
"I have seen this before. What is this sort of machine?" the Frenchman asked his "nurse"
Ren looked puzzled but then it came back to her that he again lost his memory.
"It is a car. Here let me show you(showing him what each thing of the car means.)This is a key. You put it in ignition.
Then you put the key in ignition and then turn it.(turning the key and the engine starting)Then this is the level which has a reverse, neutral, and drive.
I am backing out of my complex driveway. Putting it backwards. Which is a reverse(backing the car up)These are the pedals. The left pedal is the gas where it goes, I go. Like the body.
Where you want the body to go, it goes that way. Now we are pulling out and then after reversing the car, this small but important pedal is the break. That means to stop(stopping the car on the brake)then I put the car in drive which means straight(putting the car in drive with the foot on the gas)driving straight. You get the hang of things Passepartout."
Passepartout looked kind of confused but also very attentive and also impressed.
"Wow, that is a neat kind of machine. Very, very nice car. By the way, where are we going Madamoselle??" as Passepartout didn't know where he was going.
Ren, who knew that the poor frenchman would try to jump out of the car if she mentioned the word hospital, was careful with her words.
"Well, you are going for a check-up. Also to get cleaned up like a haircut and shave. As well as a nice and hot bath."
"Ahhhh, it will feel good to get a bath. I don't know when I have had a bath. Seems like forever."
Ren felt real bad on how she treated him the other day. As she felt an apology was needed. But she thought better wait for him to get relaxed and cleaned up.
