The person in charge was a Biblical scholar who later become Pope Benedict. I don't personally know any of the seven bishops that compiled the Catechism. They sent drafts to all of the bishops and the major Catholic institutes and universities and in response received 24,000 suggestions. I have looked up a number of footnotes, it may be references to the Bible or Church fathers. If you have a good solid understanding of the Bible it is very helpful in understanding the statements.
