Hiya guys

Given that a large percentage of believers frequent this area of CF I wanted to gain your ethical thoughts on a conversation I had at work last week.

Two Muslim workers were trying to persuade me to install a student and teacher's version of a well known software suite on my laptop at home on the basis that I will be using it to teach my subject area even though I will soon be leaving this contract.

I was explaining about how I couldn't do it because I went to the T&C of said software company and it said that if I was not a permanent member of staff at the educational institution (that had purchased the license) then I had to buy the full version which is currently at over £1000.

They said that it didn't matter because I was not intending to be using it for professional use.

So here is my "dilemma" (although I'm about to get rid of the disk) - I am currently on contracts which requires me to continually use this software and create student tutorials using this software, to show the kids how to make use of key functions in the software but I cannot afford the full version and I am not a permanent member of staff at the school. The contract ends this week. I have an older legitimate version on my machine but the screen shots would confuse the students.

As a believer, do you think I am being pedantic by not installing this software or do you agree with the Muslim work colleagues in that I am ok to use this school's version as I am not utilising the software for financial gain?

Thanks for any responses, I won't be back online until possibly next weekend

I will keep this short and sweet.

Yes, you are being pedantic.

^_^ ^_^ ^_^

You're not helping, no fair! :D

They've now offered me another big named software which I mainly use for my teaching.

Ironically I don't feel as bad about this one as the other because I've not seen anything in the T&C worded like the first one.

so install the software for the time that it serves your purpose and then uninstall.
i personally have no problem installing free software.. if someone gives you this. it was already purchased and the owner can do as they choose..
i live in canada, and we are allowed to download copyrighted software.. we are not allowed to upload it to the net.. but, we are allowed to download..
i certainly am not going to scoff at you for not doing it..

Cheers for this.

After praying about this I'm more inclined to install it long enough to update my teaching resources and then uninstall it afterwards. :)

If its software license is anything like the software licenses that the college has that my folks work at, then you may install it at home, but you must immediately and completely remove it when your employment there ceases, returning all copies. Of course, I don't know the details of this software license. Read the terms carefully.

(Embolden mine) Yep, this is it in a nutshell.

So the work colleagues were saying that irrespective of this I should basically keep the software on my machine in spite of the fact that I have now finished the contract on the basis that I would still be teaching with it and not using it commercially. Whereas I was saying that I wouldn't be able to do that.
