I love a cappella choral music. The one I've been listening most to lately is Berliner Messe (Berlin Mass) by Arvo Pärt.

Before that the most played one was Complete Sacred Music for Five Voices by Carlo Gesualdo performed by Oxford Camerata.

A long standing favorite is an out of print The Dove Descending by Canby Singers.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has favorites in a cappella choral music.

if you happened to catch it on TV this last week, the episode of "The Pillars of the Earth" had a part where the monks, led by their prior, quietly walked into a stone quarry and arranged themselves so that they were protecting the stone masons. The monks each lit the lamps they were carrying and started chanting in unison just as the Sun rose. At the second verse, as the sun came up over the mountain, the monks split into two part harmony and the stone masons began to hammer in accompanyment.

it was a very powerful scene

Tomás Luis de Victoria is my favorite. His liturgical music is very moving and expressive. I recommend Officium Defunctorum (1605) to anyone wishing to learn of his music. There is a superb performance by the Gabrielli Consort under Paul McCreesh on the Archiv Produktion label. There are also some great .midi files available for free download...

Thanks. I just sampled this one online and decided to buy it.

FWIW, I recently purchased Pilgrimage by Schola Cantorum San Francisco. I'm very happy with it. It has a variety of composers and styles, but all sacred music. I like the variety a lot. But I would caution that having variety is not mass-like.
