  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I took my little daschaund to the to the vet today and she did something that I had never seen or heard before. A little background first. My dog, Timmy, has diabetes and now he is breaking out on his face around his muzzle and he has scratched it to the point of bleeding. Called the vet a week ago and was told it was allergies and to administer benadryl-no prob there. But it was getting no better so off to the vet we went today.
Here's the part that confused me. The vet had the assistant hold my dog and with her (the assistant's)opposite hand held up and by poking the assistant, the vet was able to determine what was wrong with my dog. I am just curious if anyone here has heard this or if you know how it works.

Just wondering:scratch: Thanks

That sounds like alot of wierd "diagnostic tests" that alternative health practitioners use. There is one they call muscle testing, they will put a bunch of different pill bottles or pills on someones stomach, then they will hold their legs and some wierd thing like them getting a little longer or something if they need the pill, well something totally bizar like that, all kinds of stuff, they supposedly can feel energies, see things in the lines of hands, eyes etc. All of that stuff is not something to mess with, it is either working by demonic spirits or it is complete quakery. I would stay as far away from that place and that "vet" as I could get!!! Might help to feed your dog a high premium diet like Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and rice. That is free of biproducts, common allergins, and preservatives etc. It can take up to a month for you to see noticeable results, because the system has to clean itself and heal. If you have a Cosco, Kirkland Signature Lamb and Rice is equivalent to the Nutro but cheaper. Just an idea if it is allergies.

Thanks for the advice! I wasn't sure what to think when I saw her doing that. I did find it odd that she changed her mind on what was wrong with him! She did the "diagnostic test" the first time and said it was his pancreas but when she started to question me about what I thought might be causing it and I told her it might be my laundry detergent. She "tested" him again with a baggie of some laundry soap under his belly and said, "Yep it's his lungs, just like I thought." ?!?? Needless to say I am looking for a new conventional vet.

Petsmart sells Nutro Natural choice lamb and rice. Definitely try that instead of Iams, Iams has alot of stuff that isnt too good in it. You can get the Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice in regular or what they call small bites which is the same but little pieces that would probably be easier for your baby to eat. Give it a while and I think you will see a good change, healthier skin and coat... You could also get some brewers yeast with garlic tabs, walmart has them for $2.50 for 250 count you give one for each 10 pounds of their weight and if they are poorly you can double it. They like them you can just give them for a treat or with their regular food. Brewers yeast has lots of B vitamines and the garlic is good for the immune system.

The brewers yeast tabs are in the pet section over with the stuff for dogs. If you read the label on the iams, or any pet food and you find, biproducts, ground corn, preservatives, artificial flavor or colors, those things are all very bad. I will tell you the honest truth, Science diet is one of the worst foods out there, but it is promoted by vets because they have a thing going with the Science diet company and they are getting money for promoting it. It is not a bit healthy. It doesnt matter if a vet recommends it, better to read the labels and make your own decision. It also is not a good judge if a dog is eating it and not having any particular problems. Kind of like if you are young and you eat junk food all the time, and keep eating it, eventually it will have an effect on you and when you are older you might have problems you wouldnt have had if you had eaten healthier when you were young.

Bathing your dog with a hypoallergenic shampoo will probably help as well. Dachsunds are prone to skin allergies. Check out Doctors Foster and Smith by doing a search for them. They have great products for absolutely everything you could ever need, including tons of shampoos. I wouldn't worry to much about the food issue (Pro Plan is my personal favorite, although anything with a low amount of corn is a good one)...sounds like it's more of a typical dachsund skin thing. Make sure when you do give a bath you really rinse well, as the soap residue can cause skin irritations as well. Glad you are going to find a different vet. God bless!

Definitely an allergy of some sort. Look into his food, his bedding, garden chemicals or any such item your dog is in contact with. Even call the dog shampoo company and ask if the formula has been changed.

Our german shepherd had a bad skin allergy and we had to treat it ourselves. We used methylated spirits to dry out the sores which then healed. Ask the vet if you like, but even DR. Harry on TV said metho is fine to use on Dogs.

Make sure he can't lick it. Our dog got a little sick from it. If you need to, put a bucket around his head. This normally stops dogs getting to sore areas.

 Timmy past away early Wednesday morning. I think he just gave up the fight to live. I feel just awful for him like I had let him down. :sigh: Atleast he's out of pain now and holds a very special place in my heart. Thanks to everyone for prayers and advice.
