“By faith Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained the testimony that he was righteous, God testifying about his gifts, and through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks.” (Hebrews 11:4 NASB1995)
When I read this in Hebrews 11 about Cain and Abel, I knew I had to look into what this was all about, and so I read this in Genesis 4:
“So it came about in the course of time that Cain brought an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground. Abel, on his part also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?” He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground. Now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand.” (Genesis 4:3-11 NASB1995)
So, if we are servants of the Lord Jesus Christ, who are following him in his ways, and in his truth and righteousness, who are doing his will and purpose for our lives, in going where he sends us, and in saying what he gives us to say, we are going to have opposition. And we will have some people who will literally hate us and who will plot evil against us, even to the point of murder. But there are many ways to “murder” someone, and it doesn’t have to be with a physical weapon of warfare, either, but with their words.
Now, I will state here that even the godliest of people on this earth are probably not absolutely perfect in every way. They should be those who have died with Christ to sin, who are putting sin to death daily, by the Spirit, and who are walking in obedience to the Lord and to his commands, in the power of God, in practice. Sin must not be their practice. But just because sin is not our practice, and obedience to God is our practice, it doesn’t mean we are absolutely perfect in everything we think or say or do. We are still human.
And so, if someone hates us, like Cain hated his brother Abel, and was jealous of him and his approval from God, they may try all sorts of sneaky and underhanded ways to try to discredit us, or to try to make us look bad, even creating all sorts of lies against us so that others will not listen to us, and so that they will turn against us, too. And so they may take our words out of context, and try to make them say what they did not say in context, for they want others to not listen to us, but to reject us, instead.
And this is what so many people today are doing to the gospel message. They are removing Scriptures out of their context, and they are making them say what they do not say, if taught in the appropriate context, because they resent what they teach in context, because they call out sin for what it is, and they teach that we must die to sin and obey God in order for us to have genuine faith in Jesus Christ and salvation from sin and eternal life with God. And these false gospel messages have been let inside the church.
And they are aimed against Jesus Christ, against the teachings of the Scriptures that they don’t like, and they are twisting the words of the Scriptures to their advantage in order to excuse away their sinful lifestyles and to assure themselves of salvation from sin and eternal life with God, but regardless of how they live. And they are also aimed at all the Lord’s servants and messengers who are teaching what the Scriptures teach, in their proper context, because they want to try to discredit them, too.
So just like Cain killed his brother Abel, for he resented him and his approval from God, there are many charlatans and wolves in sheep’s clothing, and their followers, who are attacking what Jesus taught and what his New Testament apostles taught as the gospel, if taught in the appropriate context, and they are creating their own version of the gospel message which is less offensive to the ungodly and which is more accepting and pacifying of deliberate and habitual sin among those professing Jesus.
But by altering the gospel message to make it more appealing to human flesh, and much more tolerable of deliberate and habitual sin among those who profess the name of Jesus, those who do this are also murdering those who are believing them and their lies. How? Because if we believe the lies, and so we live the lies and not the truth, and we continue in deliberate and habitual sin against our Lord, and not in walks of obedience to our Lord, the Bible says that we will not inherit eternal life with God. We will die in sin.
So, make certain that your “offering to God,” via faith in Jesus Christ, is of God, and that it meets the approval of God, according to the Word of God taught in the correct context. And don’t kill the truth of the gospel just because it doesn’t fit with your chosen lifestyle. Know what the Scriptures teach by reading them word by word in context so that you will know what they really teach. For they teach that faith in Jesus, if genuine, should result in us dying to sin and obeying our Lord, in practice. But if sin is still our practice, and not obeying our Lord, then we don’t have eternal life with God.
Please read these Scriptures in their appropriate context:

Bombs are bursting. Night is falling.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Trust Him with your life today.
Make Him your Lord and your Savior.
Turn from your sin. Follow Jesus.
He will forgive you of your sin;
Cleanse your heart, made new within.
Men betraying: Our trust fraying.
On our knees to God we’re praying,
Seeking God to give us answers
That are only found in Him.
God is sovereign over all things.
Nothing from His mind escaping.
He has all things under His command,
And will work all for good.
Jesus Christ is gently calling
You to follow Him in all ways.
Men deceiving: We’re believing
In our Lord, and interceding
For our nation and its people
To obey their God today.
He is our hope for our future.
For our wounds He offers suture.
He is all we need for this life.
Trust Him with your life today.
