I would recommend a small card with a thank you message in it. Maybe with a small gift card to a store or restaurant they go to frequently.
If that is insufficient, perhaps, if it is not inappropriate, a small bouquet of flowers. Or maybe a small stuffed animal?

I like a small card, always meant more than food/flowers and can be kept to view later as a good memory.
