  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It sounds like you highly value your own words and thoughts. There's nothing wrong with that, but the bible talks a lot about dying to self and being a more selfless person. Something that has helped me work with people better is to understand that I might be wrong. About everything. Everything I think and believe could be worth a steaming heap of nothing. History is filled with people who lived and died believing things that weren't true. Some even died for causes that, in the end, didn't matter.

What matters in life isn't being right or wrong. I know that's strange coming from me, as I love to debate and discuss things that are religious and political in manner. Again, there's nothing wrong with it, but I do it to try and learn. I put forth an idea knowing it can be very wrong, but I believe it and it's a challenge to prove me wrong. It can get frustrating, but if you try to have humility, you can grow out of it.

Sorry, but I have to tell a story...

This post probably isn't about me, but I will say I often come off rough around the edges, and the reason why is that I often act quite "real". That's not to say other people act fake, but you have not really seen life until you have gone and seen someone really bad off, even more bad off than me mentally and physically, and seen their perspective on life. It really changes our cushy perspective of sitting back and thinking "Well X is right, and Y is wrong."

Now I don't think any of your opinion is wrong, per se. I'm just saying don't pass judgement on those "rougher around the edges" than you, because you haven't heard their story.

I'll be honest, you don't really know me real deeply yet, even though we have talked a lot, but when you do, you will find out I'm rougher than you like, but not as rough as the worst off. And I was even rougher when I joined these forums. But why did I improve? Because of people kind of like you Multi, who have hope in God's creation. I value your hope and think you often go in the right direction, but also say, don't be too quick to judge, either.

I really liked your very encouraging post, @Multifavs.
Me, too. I hate discord, and probably don't speak up enough sometimes. I like what Mr. O said:
Let our faith and love for God be our guiding light in Christ Jesus.

You've probably already seen this but I'm making a similar effort to increase in love. I try to say these prayers every now and then, unfortunately I'm still struggling to get into the habit of saying them:

Truth and Love

O Lord, may we be of one mind in truth and of one heart in charity.

Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine!

Act of Charity

O my God! I love Thee above all things, with my whole heart and soul, because Thou art all-good and worthy of all love. I love my neighbor as myself for the love of Thee. I forgive all who have injured me, and ask pardon of all whom I have injured.

Saint Alphonsus De Ligouri's Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that you are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I long for you in my soul. Since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though you have already come, I embrace you and unite myself entirely to you; never permit me to be separated you
Amen.

I also plan on getting off of debates until I'm a better apologist, and am better at saying the Truth in Love.

Yeah, I'm sort of similar I am a firmly believer in absolute Truth and absolutely despise relativism. My problem when I get into debates is that I tend to go for a brute force approach where I just try to shove the truth in peoples faces, needless to say that doesn't work and is counter-productive. I really want change that, but it's a struggle.

One thing I'm trying to work on, as to have an increased sense of respect and honour. I once saw a comment made by a modernist where she complained about TradCats saying the Catholicism is true and that, that was ,allegedly, (I'm 99.99% sure it isn't) driving non-catholics away from the Church. That modernist's comment has inspired to develop an attitude of having more respect for non-catholics who firmly believe and say that their believes are right and that Catholicism is false, than for non-catholics who try to cozy up to us Catholics and insist that our differences are no big deal. Now don't get me wrong there is a line to be drawn in this kind thinking, there are somethings that I should not tolerate, and I will defend the Faith, but I need to try and be careful about how offended I get, and what approach I should take in defending the Faith.

Going from love to hate, that’s easy. But going from hate to love, that’s hard. Often, the people that are hardest to love are the ones who needs it the most. Love is part of the fruit of the Spirit and cannot be manufactured but only shared because Christ has poured it into our hearts already.

What is Love?

By the way, I'm not by any means saying, I'm against non-catholics being nice with us. I'm just saying that when non-catholics treat our dogmas and devotions like no big deal, and ignore them, that's where I have problem.
