Probation, testing, closing in victory or judgment

The number 40 is another recurring quantity. The Flood of Noah lasted for forty days. Moses ran away to Midian at the age of forty and stayed in Midian for forty years. He spent forty days on Mount Sinai, getting the Commandments. After escaping Egypt, the Israelites spent forty years wandering in the desert. The spies from that Exodus spent forty days in Canaan. Ninevah was allowed forty days to repent (Jonah 3). Elijah and Jesus both fasted for forty days. Jesus spent forty days on earth after the resurrection. Israels Judges judged for forty-year terms. Kings Saul, David and Solomon each reigned for forty years. Forty must have been symbolic for a generation or a lifetime.

<LI>Forty.
This is the length of time spent in the presence of God. Forty days for an individual and forty years for a nation.
  • Personal. Forty days to test a child of God. During this time no food or drink is eaten.
    • Jesus fasted and was tempted in the wilderness. (Matthew 4: 2; Mark 1: 13; Luke 4: 2)
    • Joshua searched the land 40 days (Numbers 14: 34). Joshua 14: 7 He was 40 years old.
    • Moses was in the presence of God when he received the ten commandments. (Exodus 24: 18; 34: 28) He lived to be 120 years old. He spent 40 years as an Egyptian prince, 40 years as a shepherd and the last 40 years in the exodus.
    • Elijah fasted after he ran away from persecution. He lived forty days on the strength of the bread and water that he received from an angel. (1 Kings 19: 8)
    • Noah was in the protection of God while it rained forty days and nights. (Genesis 7: 12)
    • Forty lashes were the maximum punishment. Deuteronomy 25: 3
    • Ezekiel 4: 6; Ezekiel 29: 11
  • National. Forty years for a rebellious nation after they have rejected a personal visit from God.
    • Israel wandered in the desert before they entered the Promised Land. (Numbers 32: 13)
    • Forty years after Christ was rejected and crucified (31 A.D.), the temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 A.D.
    • Israel ate manna forty years (Exodus 16: 35)
    • Judges 13: 1. Israel subdued by the Philistines forty years.
    • 1 Kings 2: 11. And the days that David reigned over Israel were forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
  • Universal. It was 2800 years (40 x 70) from the division of the kingdom in 957 B.C. to the cleansing of the sanctuary in 1844. In both cases a remnant was called before the conquest by Babylon.
Genesis 18: 28 Abraham bargains for Sodom and Gomorrah 50, 45, 40, 30, 20, 10.

Forty might be a subset of the number forty two. The first two periods are given to prepare for the critical forty periods. For example, Jesus began His ministry at His baptism but immediately after this He went to the wilderness to be tempted. It is not unreasonable to assume that His baptism and travels might have taken two days.

When we are in the presence of the all-knowing God, we may ask for the reasoning of symbolism of the world forty.

Some of these periods of "40" were times of probation, some judgement, some trial, and some punishment.

Whatever the reason for God choosing "40" it seems to me that even though it occurs in the Bible often there is a more important number that keeps coming up and that is "7".

We have a seven day creation week, we have 70 weeks of seven as the time of probation given to the Jews. That being 490 years. We have Christ being crucified in the middle of the last seven of those years. At the end of those seven years we have the gospel being taken to the world and not kept locked up for the Jews.

All very interesting.
