I believe I read somewhere that 40 days can be used to refer to an indeterminate amount of time, sort of something like "a long time." I'm not sure though. Just throwing it out in case it's close to being right.

Perhaps the 40 years that the Jews were sustained by manna in the wilderness; that unlike their being sustained by physical food for 40 years, they were sustained by spiritual for 40 days.

Kings Saul, David and Solomon each reigned for forty years. Forty must have been symbolic for a generation or a lifetime.

For example, Jesus began His ministry at His baptism but immediately after this He went to the wilderness to be tempted. When we are in the presence of the all-knowing God, we may ask for the reasoning of symbolism of the world forty.

Some of these periods of "40" were times of probation, some judgement, some trial, and some punishment.
Whatever the reason for God choosing "40" it seems to me that even though it occurs in the Bible often there is a more important number that keeps coming up and that is "7".
We have a seven day creation week, we have 70 weeks of seven as the time of probation given to the Jews. That being 490 years. We have Christ being crucified in the middle of the last seven of those years. At the end of those seven years we have the gospel being taken to the world and not kept locked up for the Jews.
