  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Hello! I am an amature photographer right now. And right now I am taking a class where we use a fully manual 35mm camera. Mine is a Pentax K1000, but I just wanted some feedback about my pictures, from some fellow photographers.

We develop and print all of our photos by hand so we burn and dodge and all of that jazz. So just let me know what you think.

These are the first five I will have to upload more later.

Just keep in mind that photo's often look different online than in print and that the monitors vary in how images are displayed.

In looking at these, I think that adding a little magenta would bring out more depth. (If your class allows for that.) I like the angles you've used, and my favorite is the shoes. That photograph has a classic, ageless feel to it.

Me too, although this kind of shot is better served with a large format camera that has movements that increase the depth of field.

I also like Jesus2. I would print it darker to bring out the textures better and to add drama to the image.

I wish I could use a color to add more depth, but we can't use anything but filters. And I am truly afraid to go very dark on the filters because eventhough it will create a deeper richer black and dark greys it will make the whites just so white that burns would be almost impossible to do without messing up the richness of the other colors.

The Jesus is one of my favorites because this particular statue of Jesus one of my professors told that you can't capture it in Black and white photography because it is so white and it is impossible. But I showed this print to my actual photography professor and he couldn't believe I actually pulled it off, because if you can see it in front of your eyes you can see every detail and line in the cement. And because we use the glossy paper it is hard to get the scans to not reflect off of the paper.

I was wondering if it was my monitor, and I think it is. My prints don't look quite the same once uploaded.

Are you using RC paper or fiber paper?

We have to use RC Glossy. We don't get to use fiber paper until next year.

I love this shot right here because I didn't even plan this shot... this stray dog just walked up while I was taking pictures of these old abandoned buildings and just happened to catch him at the right time. When you have the actual picture in front of you, you can see his teeth in the shot.

This is another one of my favorite shots... this was the first picture I developed and printed! I love it because it shows the movement of the mallets, and when I look at it, it makes me think about the sound of the drum and the feel of the beat. So it affects more than just sight, for me it triggers sight, sound, and touch.

timpani.jpg

This is a good one too, this is actually the best picture in the class so far. And it's my fiance and me, it's my avatar too.

My professor loves this shot because I have the curve of the railroad and it just kind of disappears into the background.

So let me know what you think of these shots! I am going to be doing some more printing on Wednesday hopefully... our professor wasn't there yesterday so we didn't get to do anything and last week I developed a new roll... so I have some new material!!

It warms my heart that photography is still being taught, at least in part, with silver images and wet darkrooms. Even if the student shoots only e-photos after they graduate, they have an understanding of what the 20th century masters went through to produce their art.

I love photography! I love working in a darkroom too! This has always been a dream of mine. When I get older after I get out of school I really want to have my own personal darkroom. It's expensive but I think it's work it for me because I get so much joy and satisfaction out of working in the darkroom... it's become my meditation space kind of. I love it!!

Okay here are some more that I got to develope last night!!

bark.jpg

This is the trunk of a tree.. it was taken with a macro-tele lense. I love it! I am going to try and make it a little darker though.. it's fairly grey.

2bridges.jpg

I like this picture because the bridges come in from the sides and then just fade into the middle of the picture. I think it has a cool effect.

cross.jpg

This one is okay... it's not my favorite but I do like it. It was taken at a moseleum (spelling??) and it the background was stained glass. It would have been really pretty in color.

lake.jpg

This is one of the best landscape/waterscape I have ever taken! the reflections are just great and I just really like the way it turned out.

tree.jpg

Last but not least... this is my favorite shot out of this bunch because this tree was dead and everywhere around it there was life. It's from the ice storm last year. I just think it could be a great metaphorical picture.

My two favorites are the railroad and the bridges, but most of all...love your enthusiasm!

Are you a photography major?

Thanks! I am actually a journalism major but I am really thinking about switching to photography because I just love it so much!! and I really wouldn't changing that much because where I go to school it's more like a photojournalism major... because it's part of Mass Communications instead of an arts degree.

Go for it! It's such a good combination that should offer you so many opportunites. Might they allow for a double major?
