...................!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have McAfee Virus scan. For the past 2 months on the startup, after the Virus Shield loads, a box comes up that say that I have the wrong version of Virus Scan for my computer. I have been on chat with McAfee Support 3 times, and they assure me that it is the right version for XP. I have had it for 9 months. They told me to do a clean uninstall, and sent me the information on how to do this. I have tried it 3 times, and the VSO file will not let me delete it. It says access denied. It will not let me delete any of the 32.dll files. Any suggestions on how to delete a file that says access denied, because that is where the trouble is I feel. Thanks.

Some things you can try:

Click Start, Run, and type MSConfig. It'll load System Configuration Utility. Choose the last tab titled, Startup, and uncheck everything related to McAfee. Click "Ok," reboot your machine. When it's back up, you should receive a pop up asking if you wish to restore your original start up (or something along those lines.) Click "No." This will prevent McAfee and any associated files from loading. Once done, try to uninstall it, delete the directory and empty your temp folder.

That should clear things up and allow you to attempt to reinstall it.

My suggestion would be to dump Mcafee....they have to be one of the worst Antivirus software's there are.....

Kokopelli's advice sounds good. I'm a Norton guy myself, but the "Access Denied" message in Windows means either that the file is marked Read Only, or else that it is in use (running or open). Antivirus programs try to start ASAP (for obvious reasons) and so it's not practical to wait for them to not be in use, that'll probably never happen. If the file was marked read only it would just be a matter of right clicking and choosing properties so that flag could be turned off, but I think it's more likely the running/open situation.

That's what I'm thinking it is. Usually when that happens it's because the file's in use. I haven't seen non-OS files marked as "read only" before as it would prevent you from uninstalling the application.

If you're comfortable with dos commands, you could write down the locations of the files, boot to a command prompt (not sure how you do it with XP, but if nothing else, you could use a bootable floppy), and delete them in the command prompt.

If you're comfortable with registry hacks, you could use regedit to eliminate every reference to any file associated with McAffee (back up the registry first, though, just in case).

Else, you chould just reformat your harddrive and relead everything from scratch. Some people recommend doing this periodically anyway (like when your HD fills up).

Use the task manager to see if it is running in the task list. If it is than select it and hit the stop processes button. Use the search feature in Windows start and locate the .dll (may be more than one) now back it up at each location into a new sub folder in case you need to restore it for some reason. Now it should delete. If it does then reboot and check task manager again. Make sure you have a system rescue disk (make a floppy) on hand before you del any .dll's

Thanks Everyone for your help. I'm going to work on these suggestions today, and hopefully one of them will work. As far as McAfee being a horrible virus scan, I agree, but am tied into it until March, when my subscription runs out. God Bless.

We don't even have a virus scan on our computer these days. Is it really necessary? We haven't had any problems with a virus in probably 3 years.

If we don't know it's there and it hasn't caused a problem in years, then how can it be called a virus?

Because a virus can collect any information on your computer, like credit card numbers, passwords, bank accounts, names, locations, e-mail addys and send them all to a remote location (i.e. the guy who wrote the virus) where he collects the stolen info and uses it or sells it. It's called identity theaft and is the leading reason for virus attacks now. Often the virus will sneak in as a "Trojan Virus" attached to another progran and you may never know you have it in your computer.

Well what is the statistic now? 2 out of 3 will be victims of identity theft. Its better to worry a little now and be safe than to be unaware and victimized later. If you dont want to pay for an anti virus program there are great free ones available. When my subscription to Norton ran out I installed AVG anti-virus from a free download. There are a few others that people recommend here as well. Anything is better than nothing.
