I think that was the pheromones that Artz was telling Nikki about in the flashback. When the pheromones are released, it attracts swarms of other spiders. Paulo smooshed the spider that bit him on the neck and got its ugh all over his hand, so that probably released the scent and attracted the spiders that bit Nikki.

Yeah that seems unlikely. They would have at least noticed later that it was gone. I agree, they may have known Paulo was down there and got to him in part of the flashback we have yet to see.

Nothing about last night's episode explains why these two were brought onto the show. I loved how they weaved them into scenes we have already seen and have come to love, but still -- what was the point again?

in regards to why hasn't anyone else gotten bitten? well recall that paulo got bit by the female spider right? and arntz told nikkie that her feromones( sp) would send all the males in a hurry to her? yert right before nikki got bitten we hear that dreaded "monster noise" like eko heard before seing the smoke. so were the male spiders, the ones who bit nikki actually smokey?

This episode was a clever way of having one of those clip shows where they catch everyone up before moving the season along. Instead of having a "best moments" episode (like they did last year), they did it through the eyes of a couple of despensible characters.

Ha, maybe that was why they were introduced into the show.

I forgot about the monster noise before the spider bite. The monster tends to show up when a "bad person" needs tending to, right? That could be significant. (I'm grasping for significance to this episode.)

Could be what Paulo was seeing. He got that terrified look in his eyes.

BTW - I HATE SPIDERS! So that part of the show was just terrifying to me. Being burried alive was just disturbing. Seeing all those spiders just gave me the ebbie jebbies.

If I ever went on Fear Factor and had to choose between $50,000 and letting even 1 spider climb all over my hear, it'd be bye-bye dora.

Anyway, overall I thought it was an ok episode. Didn't really advance the plot much, but I'm not one of those people who needs a jaw dropping episode every week. After the long hiatus I'm greatful for any lost I can get

I'll take a looksy through lostpedia and pull up anything good that I come across.

Interesting tid bits from lostpedia:

The newspaper Paulo was reading in the airport was dated Thursday 24th September 2004, which is after the flight 815 crash date (22nd September 2004). The actual September 24th was a Friday.

After warning Paulo against smoking near the safe because leaving ashes could implicate them, Nikki opens and loots the safe bare-handed

The Exposé clapperboard says act A21, scene 39, take 3, 15 52 15 28
(On this note, I also noticed there was the number "22" inside the toilet cover when Paulo hid the Russian dolls- not sure if anyone else noticed or not)

Jin speaks to Hurley in Korean and he responds "yeah, I know."

Shannon complains about Boone "flirting with random guys." During a podcast and an interview, the producers hinted that a character might be revealed as gay this episode. This matches the concept of the word "exposé" as well, as Boone was outed, exposed in the episode.

It was Day 49 when Paulo overheard Ben say that he would use Michael to lure Jack, Kate and Sawyer to him. When Michael first made contact with Walt on the hatch computer it was also Day 49.

Howard refers to Paolo as the "Wolfgang Puck" of Brazil, an Austrian-American celebrity chef, restaurateur, and businessman based in Los Angeles. This is likely also a reference to Rodrigo Santoro's nickname in the media of "The Brazilian Tom Cruise."

Just cuz you sleep with someone from the opposite sex doesn't necessarily mean you are straight. Look at all the ppl who come out after being married, having children. Its a big cover.

I'd hate to think of Boone as being gay, but Shannon did keep making reference to his spending alot of time with his boyfriend Locke. (Not saying Locke is gay)
