This is a GREAT idea!

Okay, here goes...I want to look at Matthew 28:18-20 using the English Standard Version:

18 And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

This passage is often called the Great Commission. What makes it “Great”? First, this is the last recorded personal instruction given by Jesus to the disciples. Second, it is a special action plan from Jesus to all of His followers. In other words, the Great Commission is the end of the Gospel, and the start of faith in action for all Christians.

Let’s break the scripture down into parts for a minute. The first part, verse 18:

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

validates Christ’s authority over the earth. This verse acts as a clear claim to Christ’s deity. Jesus’ authority over the world is complete and total from the beginning of time.

In the second part, verses 19-20a:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

Jesus gives specific directions to believers to follow after they affirm their faith.

Finally, in the third part, verse 20b:

And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Jesus makes us a promise that He will always be with us while we share our faith. We DO NOT HAVE TO BE AFRAID TO WITNESS! That's cool stuff!

How do I use this? I firmly believe that Jesus says, “Go!” Not as an option to be considered, but as a command that God expects us to follow. We are all to share our faith with non-believers.

We don't have to wait until we are "more spiritually mature". In fact, Jesus does not say to wait. He says, "Go!". We can step out in faith and share with non-believers because Jesus makes the promise that He will be with us. He WILL show us what to do -- if we just let Him.

Again, this is a great idea for a thread. I can't wait to see what God says through others.

:amen:

Great Idea, I agree :)

One of my favourite verses has always been Psalm 121:

I lift up my eyes to the hills-
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip-
He who watches over you will not slumber;
Indeed, he who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you-
the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm-
He will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
both now and forevermore.
Psalm 121 (NIV)

To me, this scripture passage is a promise from God. He promises to be our protector, which I find to be a very reassuring image of God. This Psalm also uses nature imagery, which really speaks to me since I enjoy nature. I am continually in awe of the natural beauty of this world- sunsets, clouds, a stray wildflower growing in a crack of the sidewalk... Nature is something I find very easy to relate to, so scriptural passages referring to nature have always been favourites of mine.

While I don't think about this psalm every day, I do think of it often, especially if I am having a rough day, and feel like the world is just being mean to me... This psalm helps me to remember that God is my protector always- tough days included! He always has his eye on me, making sure I'm not faced with more than I can handle.

I wish to join in faith with you sister. I therefore offer an additional 100 blessings from my account to the one you choose to bless. I do this in service to the King, and in His love.

Ezekiel 23:14-16. But she carried her prostitution further. She saw men portrayed on a wall, figures of Chaldeans portrayed in red with belts around their waists and flowing turbans on their heads; all of them looked like Babylonian chariot officers, natives of Chaldea. As soon as she saw them, she lusted after them.

Meaning in context: Israel had split into 2 kingdoms. Neither of them walked with the Lord, but instead sought out ungodly alliances with the surrounding tribes. The second sister, of the two prostitutes from Egypt, was carried away by the fantasy of laying with the men portrayed on the wall. She was looking to be friendly with the ungodly. As a result those with whom she made alliances destroyed her.

Meaning to me: Our Father in heaven hates that we follow our own lusts, in the attempt to satisfy our desires. This includes those of us of the male persuasion who have been enslaved with the lust of the eyes in pornography. Prior to my salvation I was one of these, and have fought with it even in recent months. These verses remind me that God our Father takes a dim view of ANY lust, even that of the printed page, or I guess more recently the pixelized screen. For many, this chapter might come in handy to help men especially, but also woman, to understand that the Lord wants our total selves. It might also help me and others to see that any attempt to justify internet indecency is a lie from hell since it clearly states in the chapter that God judged the sisters for their part in the lustful actions. This is a clear reason for me, to seek deliverance of myself and others who have fallen into this deadly error.

I praise God for this scripture. It delivered me from a true evil by the revelation from our Father in Heaven. It helped me to seek forgiveness from the Father. It has given me boldness to present this error, and sin, as it is, an evil that pollutes the people of God. This one is a sure passage that points to lusting after images for all of those who try to justify their habits by saying there is nothing in scripture about this, it is a grey area. Truly, it is not at all grey, there it is in black and white.

One of the cool things about God's Word is it's ability to speak to me no matter where I am in my life. The same verse may take on a new meaning as I come to a different place in my walk. That's the case with this verse:

"But in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy..." 1 Peter 3:15a ESV

What Peter is saying here is that we are to intentionally recognize the Lordship of Jesus in all aspects of our lives – our job, our family, our finances, our recreation, and so on. This is hard. We have to go against our nature and give up control. However, we will be blessed if we do this.

"...always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you." 1 Peter 3:15b ESV

Be ready, though, because people will come knocking when you order your life around Jesus. God will send folks your way. The world is watching us. They want to see us screw up, but they will take notice when we have the joy that they are searching for. These may be people that we have witnessed to before, and they may have persecuted us for our belief. They may say something like “I saw how you handled that rude customer yesterday. I would have told him to ________. But you didn’t. That’s really cool. How could you keep your cool like that?” You have just received an invitation to share your faith. You don’t have to be a Bible scholar to tell the story now. You know what Jesus has done for you – just tell that story.

When you get an opportunity to share like this, and the opportunities will be there, you better have something to say. You can’t say “Well, you need to go talk to the preacher about that”. They want to hear your story, not the preacher’s story. God sent them to you for a reason – they need to hear what you have to say. Again, you do not have to be a Bible scholar. You know what Jesus has done for you – tell that story over and over.

"Yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame." 1 Peter 3:16 ESV

We do not have to beat folks over the head with a Bible to witness. In fact, Peter is saying, “Don’t do that”. I read a Peanuts cartoon one time where Lucy says to Charlie Brown “I would have made a great evangelist. I just convinced that boy over there that my religion is superior to his”. “How did you do that?” asked Charlie Brown. “I hit him over the head with my lunchbox”. Unfortunately, that’s the way many believers witness. I’m a big guy. I can pummel most people until they pray the prayer accepting Jesus into their hearts. But is this a real conversion? Will they be a “believer” 1 year from now? 1 month? 1 week? 1 day? Heck, 1 hour from now? Probably not. And I may have done more harm than good.

Gentleness and respect – no one has ever been “argued” into the Kingdom of God, but many have been "argued" into running away.

I guess it's kinda obvious that God has laid evangelism on my heart pretty heavy...

Hebrews 13:5 said:
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

What it means to me is that we are truly to be content in whatever situation we are in.

Whether we are married or single…
Whether we have children or can not have children…

Whether we have great health or are in pain daily…
Whether we are rich or poor…

Whether we have close friends or have no friends….
Whether we love our job or hate it…

How I apply it to my life IS to be content with what God has given me today.

[bible]Psalms 119:1-2[/bible]

Blessed, or happy, true happiness from God, is the lot for those who are undefiled in their lives. How are they undefiled? By walking in, or living according to, God's law, His word. Again, blessed are those who, as they live moment by moment, keep, guard, or treasure, His word. "Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also". Their treasure is His word, so their hearts are right, and that is true happiness. His word is their treasure because they seek Him with their whole heart, they leave nothing back. God is their greatest desire. This is living.

This is my life's pursuit. Whenever I realize my focus is off, and my attitudes are wrong, I remember these verses. Psalm 119 is my favorite chapter in the Bible. This intense passion for God and His word is my desire. To get my focus back on Him, with my whole heart, I turn to His word. It is there I find my treasures, and my happiness.

1 Corinthians 10:13 said:
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

What it means to me is individually we are not dealing with anything new…someone else has dealt with it before.
God knows where our breaking point is and will not push us beyond that.
God will faithfully be there for us to turn to. It reminds me of Footprints.
Where there was only one set of footprints it was not because God left us but because God carried us.

How I apply that to my life is the feeling of peace and assurance that God is always there regardless of what I am going thru.
Praise God.

1. Find a scripture

2. Explain what it means to you

3. How do you apply it with your daily walk with christ?
Scripture:
Psalm 42:7 said:
Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls; all of Your waves and breakers have swept over me.
Personal Meaning:
I have a 'thing' about water imagery and God. So for me, this has many meanings... my soul calling out to God... being submerged in Him... being overcome/swept away by His power...!

Daily Application:
When I sing and God touches me, I'm reminded of how He can submerge me. :) It's kind of cool to get one of those touches while driving to work.

Psalms 100 said:
Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.
Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.
For the LORD is good and his love endures forever;
his faithfulness continues through all generations.
What this means to me is…
We are to be Joyful when we worship the Lord.

For He has made the Earth and everything in it.
He made us to worship Him – that is WHY He made us.

We should be thankful for all God does for us.

How I apply this to my life…
I enjoy singing God’s praises in church.
I enjoy singing God’s praises around the house.
And I can be content because God’s love is everlasting.

Mat 13:24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

Mat 13:25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

Mat 13:26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

Mat 13:27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

Mat 13:28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

Mat 13:29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

Mat 13:30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Context of Passage: Jesus was telling parables to the people. This one is one of several that speaks of the Kingdom of Heaven. The Knigdom of Heaven is the present day church, (not any particular denomination, or group but the whole of the universal church).

What it means to me: Since I believe that we are living as citizens of the kingdom of Heaven today, it is a plain thing to see that this parable is about us. Their are many who attend church but really do not have any desire for God, and simply go to please others, or to make themselves look good. These are the weeds, and those who do not walk the narrow path of Matthew 7. The others, the wheat, are the people of God, who are striving to know Him in all of His holy glory. To me this means that we can never really know where a fellow church member is actually coming from, and so we must exercise caution in our personal dealings with others. We must test the spirit of people by looking at their fruit (Matt 7:15-20) before we entrust them with all we are. One of the issues in churches is that we cannot follow the command James 5:16, because we do not know if the one we confess toward is of the faithful. The church congregations have been infiltrated by those who do not wish to know God.

The point here, to me anyway, is that while we should love those in the church especially, and to a the rest of the world also give out love, we must be as "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matt 10:16) In short "Love all, but trust few."

In case you hadn't guessed, one of my favorite books of the Bible is Matthew. The parables are such a rich and fertile area. They reveal us, to us.

Galatians 5:22-23 said:
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

What this means to me?
If we are living a Christian life we should show these Godly traits.
These are gifts from the Holy Spirit.

How I apply this to my life?
As a human we may not wish to be friends with certain people
Or may disagree with other’s beliefs or what they are doing in their life…
BUT we are still to show compassion and kindness to ALL.

Love: agape love aka God’s love
Joy: We should be happy to share with others
Peace: We should be peacemakers
Patience: We should be patient when dealing with others
Kindness: We should remember always to be polite
Goodness: We should do what we believe God calls us to do
Faithfulness: We should always be willing to share our faith in God
Gentleness: We should try to be gentle when showing others their wrong
Self-control: We should attempt to not be reactionary

To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit.

Eze 31:14

Context: Ezekiel is delivering a curse to Egypt in the days of captivity. In this curse he goes into great discourse over the evil they did, and he compares it to the Asyrians in their day, before they fell.

What is means to me: America is about to be judged for its prideful arrogance. Our nation has departed from the covenant that our forefathers made with God and as such we began on the road to self destruction. Evil men, who claim to be self made millionares, etc. are running our nation. They claim that there is no God, and worship their money. They claim that they are the ones who have made the riches, and that they have no need of God. They said they would expand their influences to the ends of the earth, as did the Asyrians, and in prideful disobedience to the laws of God, theyworship their prosperity. This verse is a promise from God for all nations who do this. It says they will end up in the lower parts of the earth, to the pit.

Our nation, USA, is in trouble because she has gone against the very wisdom we had from the beginning. We therefore must pray for our nation, and its leadership. We must vote for the leaders, to be responsible stewards of God. We must do all we can to do our part of the great commission, and be a blessing upon the earth, without being worldly in it.

  • These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 kjv

Context: Jesus is teaching His disciples for the last time before His sacrifice.

What it means to me: This verse says lots of things to me.

It says that Jesus, when He speaks to me, gives me peace. That means when I don't have peace, it is not Jesus who spoke to me.

It also says that the Christian walk will not be easy. I will have trials from without and within. The world hates our message and so does what it can to silence us.

Finally, it says no matter what the situation, we have no reason to fear. Even if the world sends its worst against the church, He has already overcome for us, all we need to do is maintain our faith in Him.

For me personally, this is such a blessing. I can know when He is talking to me, I can know that when the troubles come He has already beaten the thing, and I know He is there with me.

1. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)

2. To me this is a further reminder of Gods command for us to love one another. By being compassionate, supportive, showing encouragement, through intercession in prayer, through our actions and thoughts, by being merciful, by upholding one another, by being accountable to one another... (I could go on and on...!)

3. I try to show the same love for other that Christ showed for us.
I pray for others.
I do my best not to gossip, particularly at work, (still slip up here if I'm honest :( ) but try to give encouragement and be supportive.
I actively seek out people whom I know are burdened or feeling weak and try and support them or simply be there for them.
I support our church through its missions and do my best to edify it and other christians through my actions.
I am seeking to become more actively involved in charity/missions/evangalism.
With Gods help I am becoming more patient and am seeking to be more open and understanding.

love4jesus - this thread is such a wonderful idea, thank you! Its great to read other responses and be able to learn from them as well as giving us all an opportunity to examine ourselves and the Word.

Pro 15:6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

Context: This is one of the proverbs of Solomon.

What it means to me: I think that God blesses the righteous with every good thing, no matter how much money they make. He is our protector, in times of trouble, our source in times of need, and our life, when death is all around us. He is the ever present strength that helps us through our darkest times. Most of all, in this verse He is the supplier of great riches, not to be squandered, but to be shared with those less fortunate. How He could prosper the world, and gain citizens for the kingdom if only we would hear this. The later part of this proverb also speaks to me. Our wealth, if used improperly, will be a constant torment to our very souls.

I am not pushing legalism here, but I do think if we followed the mandate of Mal 3:9-12, we would see a whole new picture of God and the world, which would reveal to us, a God who blesses His children with great treasure, not all of it spiritual, so that the world could see that God is good.

Truly, the proverbs are a great source of promise from our Holy Lord and King.
