I am studying 2 Timothy and would be interested in hearing commentary on the following points:
1) CONTEXT AND TIMING: From the text, it is clear Paul is writing this:
In distressed circumstances. (2 Tim 1:8, 1:12, 1:16, 2:3, 2:9)
From Rome. (2 Tim 1:17)
This letter was written after the letter to the Ephesians and to the Colossians. (Compare 2 Tim 4:10-11 with Col 4:14)(Compare 2 Tim 4:12 with Col 4:7 and Eph 6:21-22)
This letter was written to Timothy who was an elder of the church in Ephesus, appointed and trained by Paul himself.
63AD seems the most likely date just after Neros fire July 19th 64AD- as the traditional date of Pauls death is 64AD
2) What it says about Ephesus:
Paul was there 3 years (Acts 20:31) and trained many of the leaders there - he mentions Priscilla and Aquila, Onesiphorus and Timothy himself.
False Teachings (2 Tim 1:6–15)
Need for a clean leadership culture, practicing integrity, doing one's duty, staying steadfast under persecution, and training up people to follow in your footsteps.
3) John connection: Is it possible that the apostle John carried this letter to Ephesus as he arrived there at roughly this time? Would John have then been in charge of the church or Timothy?
4) The message:
Paul offers a personal challenge to Timothy to keep following Jesus no matter the sacrifice and risk. The letter also reminds Timothy to maintain faith and hope in Jesus' resurrection and raise up faithful leaders who will teach the good news about Jesus.
